Postdoctoral Fellows, Nuclear Theory Group, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory/UC Berkeley: The Nuclear Theory Program at LBNL anticipates having two or more postdoctoral fellow positions available starting in the fall of 2019. Major areas of interest in the nuclear theory group at LBNL include a) QCD matter at high temperatures and densities, QCD hard processes in nuclear collisions and jet propagation, and transport descriptions at both the partonic and hadronic levels; b) weak interactions and low-energy tests of symmetries; c) nuclear and neutrino astrophysics, including nucleosynthesis and the numerical modeling of extreme astrophysical environments, such as supernovae and neutron star mergers; d) and high-performance computing applications to nuclear physics, including both lattice QCD and many-body methods such as the shell model. Candidates with research interests in any of these areas are encouraged to apply. Senior members of the LBNL/UC Berkeley group include Wick Haxton, Dan Kasen, Volker Koch, Andre Walker-Loud, Xin-Nian Wang, and Feng Yuan. The LBNL/Berkeley research environment is a vibrant one with strong and diverse postdoctoral and visitor programs. Postdocs have the opportunity to take advantage of the NERSC SuperComputing Facility and supporting computational science at LBNL, as well as CalLat computing at Lawrence Livermore’s National Laboratory. We have close ties to the UC Berkeley Physics and Astronomy Departments: our group includes several UC Berkeley graduate students. Successful candidates must have a recent Ph.D. in theoretical physics (or astrophysics/astronomy) and the ability to work productively within LBNL’s diverse research environment, including the production and publication of original research and the effective presentation of research results in seminars and at scientific meetings. The postdoctoral appointment will be for one-year with the expectation of renewal for a second year, contingent upon satisfactory performance, continued funding, and ongoing needs. Requested application materials: Please submit your CV, a publication list, a statement of research interest, and arrange for three letters of reference. To ensure full consideration, interested candidates are requested to submit their applications before the deadline of December 1, 2018. Women and members of under-represented groups are especially encouraged to apply. For further inquiries please contact Feng Yuan (fyuan [at] lbl [dot] gov) LBNL is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, age or protected veteran status.
