Position Title: Research Assoc - ATLAS
Position Type:Postdoctoral
Position Location:Menlo Park, California 94025, United States [map]
Subject Area: High Energy Physics / Experiment
Appl Deadline:2018/11/09 (posted 2018/10/03, listed until 2019/03/17)
Position Description:

The SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory (SLAC) is seeking an experimental Research Associate to work on the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN, with a focus on the development of machine learning techniques and applications for ATLAS / LHC data reconstruction, simulation, analysis. The LHC presents ideal opportunities for physics measurements and searches, developing experimental experience in a challenging environment of rapidly increasing luminosity, and the development of new machine learning applications at the energy frontier. This opening allows participation in a selection of experimental areas that SLAC is involved in, and in a variety of physics and machine learning topics. The successful candidate may take the initial post at CERN. The potential start time for this position is Winter 2018 / Spring 2019.

The SLAC ATLAS group consists of approximately 20 people, of which 5 are currently based at CERN. Information on the SLAC ATLAS group can be found on our web page http://www.slac.stanford.edu/exp/atlas/. Main physics research areas with current activities and developing interests:
• SM and BSM Higgs and di-Higgs physics analysis
• Machine learning applications in simulation, reconstruction, trigger, and analysis
• b-tagging and tracking
• Jets, jet substructure and tagging

The successful candidate is expected to contribute significantly to the development of machine learning applications and techniques for the LHC data analysis, and to physics analysis efforts. Physics analysis efforts currently focus on Higgs and di-Higgs searches and measurements, but new directions in physics analysis efforts are also possible. The candidate will also have the opportunity to become involved in the ATLAS ITk Pixel Inner System development, for which SLAC will play a crucial role as the assembly site.

Qualifications:
These are highly competitive positions as part of the general research associate program at SLAC, requiring a background of demonstrated excellence in research and a recent PhD in experimental particle physics, computer science, or related field, or have completed the requirements for such a degree prior to starting the position. Experience with research in machine learning and the associated research tools (such as Tensorflow, Keras, PyTorch, etc.) is highly beneficial. The position is initially a two year term with the possibility of renewal.

The deadline to submit the application materials is November 9, 2018.

SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes nominations of women and minority group members. Hires at the SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory are subject to Department of Energy approval, and are required to complete Environmental Safety & Health training.
