PhD Positions in Ultracold Atom Research

Supervisor: Dr. Peter Schauss (Assistant Professor, Department of Physics)

The new ultracold matter group at the University Virginia invites applications for PhD positions in the field of ultracold atoms in optical lattices. We perform quantum simulation of condensed matter model systems using ultracold fermionic atoms. Currently, we are setting up a new experiment for quantum gas microscopy of fermionic lithium atoms in an optical lattice. This experiment will be able to image single lithium atoms in strongly correlated many-body systems to perform experiments on non-standard Hubbard Hamiltonians and realize exotic quantum materials.

PhD candidates with the following qualifications are preferred:
 • Highly motivated and passion for ultracold atom research
 • Degree with major in Physics
 • Basic knowledge in optics and atomic physics
 • Previous research experience

If interested, please send an email to Dr. Peter Schauss at ps5nw (at) virginia (dot) edu and you will receive information when and how to apply. About the University of Virginia:
The University of Virginia is distinctive among public institutions of higher education. Founded by Thomas Jefferson in 1819, the University continues in its mission to develop tomorrow’s leaders who are well prepared to help shape the future of the nation and the world. The University is highly selective, accepting only the best students and those who show the exceptional promise Jefferson envisioned.
The University of Virginia is made up of eleven schools in Charlottesville plus the College at Wise in Southwest Virginia. Not including the College at Wise, the University employs nearly 30,000 people, including approximately 16,000 faculty and staff and approximately 12,000 Health System employees.
For 2019, the University was ranked the No. 3 best public university by U.S. News & World Report. In the 20 years since U.S. News began ranking public universities as a separate category, UVA has ranked in the top three and continues to rank in the Top 30 among the best of all national universities, public and private.

About Prof. Schauss:

Peter Schauss is currently Assistant Professor in the Department of Physics at the University of Virgina. Before joining UVa, he was a Postdoctoral Research Associate on a Dicke Fellowship at Princeton University, working with Prof. Waseem Bakr on ultracold fermionic quantum gases in optical lattices. He received his PhD in Physics for his work at the Max Planck Institute of Quantum Optics in Germany in 2015 under the supervision of Prof. Immanuel Bloch. His current research focuses on ultracold fermions in optical lattices to implement non-standard Hubbard Hamiltonians. His work on ultracold atoms in optical lattices has led to publications in various journals, such as Science, Nature, Physical Review X, Nature Physics, Physical Review Letters as well as 25 invited talks. Dr. Schauss was recognized as a Blavatnik Family Foundation 2018 Regional Award Finalist.
