Position Description:

The Department of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University invites applications for three tenure-system faculty positions, one each in the general areas of structural engineering, environmental engineering and wind engineering, with a preferred start date of September 1, 2019. The search is open at the Assistant Professor or Associate Professor levels, depending on qualifications.

For the structural engineering position, we are interested in applicants with the expertise in autonomous and adaptive systems, innovative/non-conventional materials, mechanics, sustainability and resiliency. Desired research foci for the environmental engineering candidates are on environmental physical-chemical processes, environmental chemistry, water systems sustainability, and sustainable water-energy-food systems. Expertise for the wind engineering position is desired on a computational fluid dynamics for atmospheric applications, land based and offshore wind energy systems, and marine energy systems. In addition to the noted areas of expertise, of high importance is the candidates' intellectual depth and promise in research and teaching. Individuals with the ability to conduct multidisciplinary research, through their own endeavors as well as through collaborations within and outside the department, are particularly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities for the positions include developing a robust externally-funded research program, pursuing high impact scholarly research, teaching undergraduate and graduate courses as part of the civil engineering curricula, advising and guiding students, and becoming engaged in outreach and professional activities. A Ph.D. in a field related to the position focus is required; and a professional engineer's license, or the potential to obtain one is highly preferred.

Civil Engineering at Stony Brook was established in 2012 and is now one of nine academic departments within the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS). The department currently consists of 7 tenure-system faculty members with approximately 200 undergraduate and 20 graduate students. The new faculty members will thus play a key role in the continued growth and development of Civil Engineering at Stony Brook University. The department recently developed a number of key research facilities, including an 85-foot integrated wave and current flume facility, a super-computing cluster with over 1,200 cores and 70 TB data storage, and an environmental cyclic triaxial capable of controlling temperature (from -20 degrees C to 60 degrees C), degree of saturation and load type (static or dynamic).

As one of only two comprehensive (Bachelors to PhD) civil engineering programs within the State University of New York System, the Department of Civil Engineering at SBU is playing a key role in addressing the critical infrastructure challenges regionally and globally. The department is also a partner in two New York State centers: the Center for Clean Water Technology and the Infrastructure, Transportation and Security Center. Faculty in the college collaborate with researchers in the Center of Excellence in Wireless and Information Technology (CEWIT) and the Advanced Energy Research Technology Center (AERT), which was recently awarded $38.5 million to administer an offshore wind research and development consortium.

Stony Brook University, home to many highly ranked graduate research programs, is located 60 miles from New York City on Long Island's scenic North Shore. Our 1,040-acre campus is home to 24,600 undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral students and more than 13,500 faculty and staff, including those employed at Stony Brook Medicine, Suffolk County's only academic medical center and tertiary care provider. The University is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities and co-manager of nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), a multidisciplinary research laboratory supporting world class scientific programs utilizing state-of-the-art facilities such as the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, the National Synchrotron Light Source, the Center for Functional Nanomaterials, and the New York Blue IBM BG/L+P supercomputer, owned by Stony Brook and managed by BNL. Stony Brook is a partner in managing the Laboratory for the Department of Energy, and is the largest institutional scientific user of BNL facilities. As such, many opportunities exist for collaborative research, and in some cases, joint appointments can be arranged.
