Adjunct Instructor Positions in Master of Public Policy (MPP) Program 

Overview: Sanford School of Public Policy/MPP Program

The Sanford School of Public Policy’s precursor was the Institute for Policy Sciences and Public Affairs, established in 1971 in Duke’s Trinity College of Arts & Sciences by Terry Sanford, Duke President, NC Governor, and US Senator. In 1991, the Institute was renamed to honor Terry Sanford. The first Master of Arts in Public Policy degree was awarded in 1993, and in 1994, the Sanford Institute opened its first building. A second building, named for benefactor David Rubenstein, opened in 2005. In 2009, the Sanford School of Public Policy became Duke’s tenth school. The MPP has at its core Terry Sanford’s vision for an interdisciplinary program geared toward training future leaders. As noted in the 2015 MPP Curriculum Review Committee Report to the Faculty, “a distinctive keystone of the MPP program is to infuse our graduates with the capability for ethical leadership that will enhance the common good.” With top-ranked graduate degree programs, the Sanford School of Public Policy aspires to be a leading school of public policy for the 21st Century and to be recognized in the region, in the nation, and throughout the world as a leader in the policy field. Most professional degrees are singularly focused on a discipline: i.e., business, law, engineering. The MPP degree has intentionally been crafted to provide true interdisciplinary preparation for policy-related careers in government, nonprofits and corporations. The program outfits students to be leaders and problem-solvers in a world that requires solid policy evaluation and creation across a multitude of pressing issues, with a foundation of quantitative expertise, familiarity with frameworks of policy analysis, understanding of policy’s political context, and a commitment to ethical norms. 

Adjunct Instructor Position 

The Sanford School of Public Policy is seeking an applicant for an adjunct instructor position in the Master of Public Policy (MPP) program. This non-regular-rank, non-tenure-track position is intended to bring qualified practitioners to the MPP classroom to provide students with knowledge about practical applications of policy and to build students’ skills in applying knowledge to real-world circumstances. Candidate must have a post-baccalaureate degree or experience/expertise commensurate with an advanced degree. Specifically, the candidate should have experience in the policy world and public service and be able to teach graduate courses related to policy. The preferred candidate will have university teaching experience, a strong commitment to working with students in the classroom and on projects, and high personal motivation and responsibility toward maintaining the integrity of the learning environment and process. 

The Adjunct Instructor will:
  • Teach half-semester or full-semester graduate level course(s) 
  • Prepare syllabus that includes course objectives, readings and assignments
  • Grade assignments and provide written and verbal feedback on a timely basis
  • Respond to student questions and issues related to the class; hold office hours
  • Distribute MPP required course evaluations to students at the end of the semester
  • Provide final course grades within the University required timeframe
  • Use Duke University email address for course/Duke related correspondence 
  • Follow Duke University parking regulations
  • Abide by Duke professional standards, including Duke's Harassment Policies and the Consensual Relationship Policy 
  • Protect the confidentiality, privacy, and security of student, staff, business, and other confidential, sensitive, electronic or proprietary information of Duke University from any source and in any form (spoken, paper, electronic, etc.) that is created, accessed, used, or disclosed by/to you
