The Department of English at Arizona State University invites applications for a Director of Online Programs, at the rank of Principal Lecturer, FSC with an anticipated start date of July 2019. ASU, located within the dynamic metropolitan Phoenix area, is a Research I institution with outstanding research facilities and infrastructure support, known for its innovative and entrepreneurial vision. Our English department is a large, diverse unit of faculty committed to excellence in teaching, innovative research, and community engagement. This is a full-time, benefits-eligible appointment made on a fiscal year basis (July 1 – June 30). The successful candidate will oversee and manage the Department of English’s online programs.

Essential Functions of the Job:

  • Overseeing and managing support staff
  • Reviewing Department of English courses for pedagogical quality
  • Coordinating and managing updates to online courses
  • Managing admissions to the online graduate programs
  • Advising the Chair and Associate Chair on matters of curriculum, program structure, scheduling, and staffing
  • Overseeing recruitment of online teaching staff
  • Providing administrative support and professional development to online faculty
  • Representing interest of Department of English’s online programs at college and university level meetings
  • The Principal Lecturer, FSC (Director of Online Programs) will teach four (4) courses per calendar year (Fall, Spring, and Summer).

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in English Literature, Linguistics, or related discipline in hand by the time of appointment
  • Evidence of strong commitment to online teaching and at least five years experience college-level teaching.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience teaching in internet or hybrid formats
  • Experience with administrative/managerial oversight
  • Evidence of proficiency in online pedagogy
  • Familiarity with Canvas learning platform
  • Demonstrated success meeting the needs of underrepresented student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities
