The Department of Biology at Duke University seeks applicants for the position of Instructor B for Bio202L Gateway to Biology: Genetics and Evolution lab sections and Bio203L Gateway to Biology: Molecular Biology, Genetics, and Evolution lab sections. Bio202L is an introduction to principles of transmission genetics and evolution and includes Mendelian and non-Mendelian inheritance, quantitative genetics, genetic mapping, evidence for evolution, natural selection, genetic drift, kin selection, speciation, molecular evolution, and phylogenetic analysis with relevance to human family and social structure, evolution of infectious disease, human hereditary disorders, and social implications of genetic knowledge. The weekly laboratory includes a course-based undergraduate research experience (CURE) investigating molecular evolution and genetic diversity of ants. Bio203L covers the same material as Bio202L but also includes major concepts in molecular biology. Topics include molecular mechanisms that comprise the Central Dogma and variants; DNA structure and function, replication, transcription, and translation; protein synthesis, folding, structure and function. Supporting topics related to the structure of cells like metabolism and energetics are included. The weekly laboratory includes a semester-long molecular evolution CURE that is designed to bridge the gap between course concepts in molecular biology and evolution. The primary duty of the Instructor B position is to teach Bio202L lab sections during the fall semester and Bio203L lab sections during the spring semester. The duties include but are not limited to: attending course lectures three days per week; providing instruction and supervision for students in your assigned sections during the scheduled lab periods and occasional discussion/review sections; participating in weekly prep sessions and staff meetings; assisting with the preparation and grading of lecture quizzes and midterm and final exams; grading the written and oral assignments of students in your sections; and meeting with students during office hours outside of scheduled class time. Your prep responsibilities shall be to follow the directions of the Laboratory Manager, Dorian McMillan, or her full-time Lab Preparator assistants, as necessary to support the teaching labs in Biology 202L and 203L and the other courses supported by the preparatory staff. You will be expected to work during the hours agreed upon at the beginning of each semester for each week that the University is in session. The Instructor B is expected to teach two to three lab sections during the semester, depending upon class enrollment. The salary is $34,700 for the nine month appointment with a course load of five sections. The position is benefits eligible. The successful candidate will have at least a Masters Degree in Biology or closely related discipline and some teaching experience.
