Location:              Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14853-5701. The academic home for this position is the Department of Landscape Architecture in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences.


Position Description and Responsibilities:

The College of Agriculture and Life Sciences is a pioneer of purpose-driven science and home to Cornell University’s second largest population of students, faculty and staff. The Department of Landscape Architecture at Cornell University seeks applications for a three-year lecturer position to begin fall 2019. This position requires the candidate to have teaching and/or professional practice experience in high quality contemporary design and the ability to teach design studios grounded in the historical and theoretical foundations of the field. The successful candidate must have knowledge of current issues facing landscape architects such as sea level rise, water management, social and environmental justice, and the agency of design as the key to addressing emerging socio-ecological issues at multiple scales. In addition to graduate and undergraduate studio teaching, the candidate will be expected to have expertise and interest in at least one other area that will allow them to teach workshops, seminars, or technical courses on topics such as ecological infrastructure, site scale applied ecological technologies, site assembly, and construction techniques. 

The department is currently developing a strategy for the integration of ecological principles and applied ecological technologies into the technical course sequence and design studios that will include planting design, materiality and assemblies, analog and digital technologies for making and fabrication, and fieldwork and other approaches to site-based design inquiry. The successful candidate will be expected to work with faculty in the formulation of this strategy and contribute to its implementation. The long term goal is to create a Research by Design Laboratory that becomes a platform for synergies of faculty scholarship and creative inquiry. An integral component of this lab will be the departmental maker space, currently being upgraded, and the candidate will be expected to work with faculty in developing this space and its operations strategy. The proposed Research by Design Laboratory will connect conceptual thinking with material expression in drawing, modeling, simulation, and making grounded in the technological and material history of landscape architecture.

These courses will contribute to a curriculum that aims to prepare skilled and critical practitioners and researchers and expand the role of landscape architecture in addressing urgent anthropogenic issues. We seek faculty with innovative professional and/or teaching experience who can contribute to the development of a systematic cultural and ecological foundation for the design of environments.


The lecturer must have at least one professional design degree in landscape architecture, Required Master of Landscape Architecture (MLA). Prior teaching experience is desirable but not required.

Student Advising:

The lecturer will not have formal advisees assigned to them. However, students will expect to get informal advice on job searches and internship opportunities.

Anticipated Division of Time:

The lecturer will be responsible for two graduate or undergraduate design studios per year, one per semester of this three-year contract along with two seminars or technical courses per year, also one per semester.
