*** The account for School of Physics and Astronomy, UNIVERSITY OF EDINBURGH has expired. ***

Applications are invited for the Higgs Chair of Theoretical Physics at the University of Edinburgh. This Chair was established in recognition of the legacy of Nobel Laureate Peter Higgs, a Professor Emeritus in the School of Physics and Astronomy, whose ideas have been guiding the course of high energy physics for over half a century and whose teaching of theoretical physics has inspired students and researchers alike.

Following the discovery of the Higgs boson at the LHC in 2012, the University founded the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics to promote research excellence in theoretical physics, aiming to answer fundamental questions about Nature by developing new ideas and concepts. Our vision is to create bridges between disciplines and combine graduate school education in synergy with cutting-edge research. In the seven years since the Centre was established we have started to realise this vision and created a wealth of scientific activity, demonstrating the long-term commitment of the University of Edinburgh to this field.

We now wish to bring an exceptional theoretical physicist to join the Centre. We seek a visionary leader who will enhance and promote the quest for the fundamental understanding of the laws of Nature. The position is open to researchers in any area of theoretical physics. The Chair is expected to have a broad perspective and promote ideas that connect between disciplines in physics and/or between physics and mathematics. The expectation is that the Chair will provide intellectual leadership to the Centre as a whole, and may act as the next Director for a number of years.

In conjunction with the appointment of the Higgs Chair, the University is committed to continue investing in the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics. Specifically, the successful applicant will be able to negotiate a funding package to support the Chair that is expected to include additional positions.

Candidates will have an outstanding research record of international stature in theoretical physics and the vision, leadership, experience and enthusiasm to build on current strengths in maintaining and developing a leading research presence. A commitment to excellence in teaching is essential and all academic staff are expected to teach and to contribute to curriculum development at undergraduate and postgraduate level. This includes lecture courses across the School’s undergraduate programme, and supervision of undergraduate, MSc, and PhD students. The Higgs Chair is expected to contribute to the life and work of the School of Physics and Astronomy in general, and to the Higgs Centre for Theoretical Physics in particular, demonstrating a collegiate approach to School, College and University-wide leadership roles, committees and initiatives.

The role is grade UE10 and attracts an annual salary on the professorial scale for 35 hours each week.

Closing date for applications is 31 August 2019.
