EUGENE, OREGON 97403-1251. University of Oregon. Tenure-track ASSISTANT PROFESSOR position beginning Fall 2020. The Department of Geography seeks a scholar in the area of Environmental Remote Sensing who uses cutting-edge approaches in data science to address regional-to-global topics of environmental change. The Department of Geography has undergraduate majors in Geography and in Spatial Data Science and Technology. The successful applicant will serve as a core faculty in the growing Spatial Data Science and Technology major, and will address in their research and teaching such data-science topics as 1) data exploration and preparation, 2) data representation and transformation, 3) data analysis, 4) data modeling, 5) data management, and 6) data visualization and presentation. Example areas of research include aspects of biodiversity and conservation threats, urbanization, carbon and other biogeochemical fluxes, agricultural change, land use / land cover dynamics, and dynamics of the biosphere, cryosphere, and hydrosphere. This search is one of nearly a dozen associated with the Presidential Initiative in Data Science at the University of Oregon. This initiative spurs intentional growth in research and education using big data and cutting-edge analytics across the entire campus (see The university is building a cross-disciplinary data science program on a foundation of strong interdisciplinary research and innovative education at a liberal arts research university. The Initiative seeks scholars excited to contribute to the program’s growth through excellence in a specific academic focus, as well as through interdisciplinary collaborations across data science writ large. Data Science is supported by the university’s multi-million dollar investment in the recently launched Talapas supercomputing cluster that is a centerpiece of Research Advanced Computing Services ( The Data Science Initiative will also have synergies with the Knight Campus for Accelerating Impact (, itself recently launched by a $500 million dollar lead gift from Phil and Penny Knight. The individual will be expected to teach courses in remote sensing and related courses from the freshman to graduate level. Applicants must have an existing (or potential for) successful publication record in the area of environmental remote sensing. Applicants must also have experience in (or potential for) obtaining research funding from competitive grant programs such as those of NSF and NASA, experience in (or potential for) maintaining a strong research program, and experience in (or potential for) advising graduate students. Ph.D. in Geography or a related field required at time of appointment.
