Faculty Position Available in
Landscape Architecture
Cornell University

Position Description and Responsibilities:
The Department of Landscape Architecture invites applications for a tenure-track position with 70% teaching and 30% research responsibilities. Over its 115-year history, Cornell’s Department of Landscape Architecture has achieved national recognition for its excellence in innovative teaching pedagogies that challenge students to become responsible and creative designers. Our department is adapting to meet the critical issues affecting the planet and its inhabitants through a continued emphasis on the agency of design.

The department offers three unique degrees. The MLA provides the foundational, historical, theoretical, technical and skills-based grounding of the field of landscape architecture. The MPS degree offers students a one-year immersive course of study, including a collaborative research project. The BSLA is the only undergraduate professional degree in landscape architecture offered at an Ivy League institution and combines university requirements in biological, physical, and social sciences, humanities, and written and oral communication within a studio-based design curriculum.

The Department of Landscape Architecture seeks faculty with innovative professional and/or teaching experience who can help prepare our graduates to become skilled, critical practitioners and researchers in addressing urgent anthropogenic issues. In addition to teaching studios, workshops and seminars, the candidate will be expected to contribute expertise in one or several key topics shaping contemporary discourse in the discipline: these include ecological infrastructure, planting design, materiality and construction techniques, fabrication technologies, landscape history and theory, as well as site-based, fieldwork methods. The long term goal is to combine departmental expertise to create a Research by Design Laboratory that becomes a platform for synergies of faculty scholarship and creative work. More broadly, we seek faculty with innovative professional practice experience, studio teaching, and/or research who can contribute to the development of a systematic cultural and ecological foundation for the design of environments within the department, the College, and the university as a whole. The successful candidate will be responsible for two design studios, one per semester, at either the graduate or undergraduate level. In addition, the candidate will propose two other courses per year in one or several areas of focus listed above. Tenure track faculty are assigned student advisees and, in addition to curricular advising, will be expected to provide informal advice on job searches and internship opportunities.

Qualifications:
Successful applicants will have an accredited degree in landscape architecture, and are expected to be developing a body of rigorous research or creative inquiry that addresses contemporary and future challenges in landscape architecture. An MLA is required and a PhD or license within the field or related discipline is desirable.
