Postdoctoral Opportunity in Quantum Materials Research at CHESS

The Center for High Energy X-ray Science (CHEXS) at the Cornell High-Energy Synchrotron Source (CHESS) seeks a postdoctoral researcher in the field of Quantum Materials to join our scientific team. The successful candidate will perform quantitative analysis of diffuse scattering to understand short-ranged correlations and identify hidden orders in novel quantum systems. The position is affiliated with the newly constructed “Q-Mapping for Quantum Materials” or “QM2” beamline at CHESS. This is a yearly appointment, which can be renewed annually based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

What You Will Do:
+ Use X-rays to understand the interplay between structural, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom in quantum materials.
+ Creatively contribute the development of new synchrotron methods and techniques.
+ Communicate results through publications in peer reviewed journals and presentations at national and international conferences.

Requirements:
+ Ph.D. or equivalent in the physical sciences or engineering.
+ Strong background understanding of the physics of materials, demonstrated by track record of impactful publications.
+ Desire to work in a multidisciplinary research environment, interacting with researchers at all levels, including students and facility users.
+ Proficiency in science communication, written and oral, formal and informal.

Assets:
+ Prior experience in x-ray and/or neutron scattering at large user facilities
+ Prior experience with high performance computing and data-intensive research
+ Proficiency with scientific software (Python, C, SPEC, MATLAB, etc)
