Position Description: |
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral
position to perform research on the theory of non-ergodic quantum systems with
Prof. Maksym Serbyn. The position is supported by an ERC Starting Grant on
non-ergodic quantum matter. The
post(s) are available for a fixed-term period of 2 years starting on 1
September 2020 (or mutually agreed date before/after), with a possible
extension to a third year contingent on performance and funding. The position
allows considerable flexibility in research topics, but the grant has as its
main theme the different routes of avoiding thermal equilibrium in isolated
quantum systems, approached using both analytical and numerical techniques. Successful
candidates will conduct research in collaboration with Prof Serbyn. Duties will
include carrying out research in theoretical physics within the general areas
supported by the ERC grant; related tasks will include collaborating in the
preparation of reports and journal publications, presenting papers at
conferences and workshops, and representing the group at meetings/seminars. There
will also exist the opportunity to engage in teaching and other outreach
activities.
Candidates
must hold (or be about to complete) a PhD/DPhil in physics, or a closely
related field. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in
one or more of the following areas: · disordered systems,
including Anderson/many-body localization & random matrices · quantum information,
entanglement measures, entanglement dynamics, and mathematical physics methods · tensor network methods · (non-equilibrium) quantum field theories and Bethe-ansatz integrability A
subset of the research projects will have a strong experimental link, and may
involve close collaboration with experimental groups at IST Austria, the Vienna
area and nationally/internationally. Previous experience with such
collaborations is a plus. Applications
can be submitted at this web page. You will be required to upload a CV
(including a list of publications), brief statement of research interests, and
two preprints or published papers as part of your application. You will also be
asked to provide details of at least two referees. There is no hard deadline
for application, but the review of applications will commence on the 1st of
January, 2020. Please
direct enquiries about the role to Prof. Serbyn at maksym.serbyn@ist.ac.at.
