Assistant Professor of German Studies

The School of International Letters and Cultures (SILC) invites applications for a full-time tenure-track appointment in German Studies beginning in August 2020 at the rank of Assistant Professor. We especially encourage applicants with research and teaching interests in the Environmental Humanities, Migration Studies, or Medical Humanities/Disability Studies. The ideal candidate will be a dynamic, creative teacher-scholar committed to high quality undergraduate and graduate education and student-faculty research. The successful candidate should have a strong interest in helping to forge research and curricular links between SILC and other units at ASU. The SILC German program offers a Bachelor of Arts major and minor programs, and is part of a vibrant European Studies faculty. Members of the faculty also participate in the SILC transdisciplinary PhD program in Comparative Culture and Language. Essential Functions of the Position:
The successful candidate will be expected to:
  • Maintain an active research agenda in the interdisciplinary fields of their area of research
  • Teach undergraduate and graduate courses in English and the target language
  • Mentor graduate students and undergraduate honors students
  • Contribute to curriculum and program development
  • Participate in service to the university and profession as appropriate to rank
Required Qualifications:
  • Ph.D. in German (or related comparative field) at the time of hire
  • Native or near-native proficiency in German and English
  • Evidence of excellence in college-level teaching
  • Research focus in the Environmental Humanities, Migration Studies, or Medical Humanities/Disability Studies
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience teaching college-level courses in language, literature, and cultural studies
  • Evidence of ability to teach in the target language and in English
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in teaching college-level online courses
  • A record of published research in the interdisciplinary fields of the Environmental Humanities, Migration Studies, or Medical Humanities/Disability Studies
  • Demonstrated success meeting the needs of diverse student populations and/or collaborating with diverse communities beyond the university
