We Are:

Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory (Fermilab)’s Scientific Computing Division (SCD) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate to work on the High Velocity Artificial Intelligence project. The successful candidate will work on the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to high energy physics (HEP) experiments.

The primary focus of the project is uncertainty quantification and explainability in AI in the context of hard sciences. Additionally, the project tackles the problem of scaling these and other algorithms for HEP workloads in heterogeneous computing environments including the Open Science Grid, commercial clouds, and at leadership-class computing facilities such as Summit, currently the most powerful supercomputer. The position will offer opportunities for membership in the Fermilab experimental program as well.

Successful participation in this project will involve collaboration with science teams working in collider, neutrino, and cosmological physics, as well as working with research partners in computer science and mathematics. Given the broad range of expertise and interests in the primary project team, the successful applicant might come from an equally broad range of backgrounds including computer science, mathematics, or physics.

Every effort will be made to design the research program and to maintain support for a Fermilab Research Associate so that you will have the opportunity to publish results and build a portfolio of work aimed at securing employment in your preferred field.

The appointment is for a period of up to three (3) years, with the potential for extension based on successful proposals for additional funding.

You Will

• Study and apply novel algorithms for uncertainty quantification in HEP

• Develop and implement code for fast inference in HEP software frameworks

• Present work to colleagues and at conferences

We Are Looking For

• Ph.D. in Physics, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or other relevant discipline by the time of the appointment

• Demonstrated computational skills and familiarity with the formal aspects of machine learning

• Clear record of academic accomplishments and publications

• Excellent verbal and written communication skills

• Ability to use creative problem-solving skills independently and in collaboration with others

• Ability to travel by automobile and/or commercial aircraft both domestically and internationally

We respect, understand and value individual differences that embody the principles of diversity, and abide by all environment, safety, and health regulations. Successful candidates will join a team with deeply held commitments to these principles and will be expected to share in these commitments.
