Position Description:    

The College of Arts & Sciences Writing Program at Boston University seeks a Director of ESL to assume the intellectual and administrative leadership of the Writing Program's English as a Second Language courses and initiatives. The Director of ESL’s specific responsibilities include administering the program’s ESL courses (approximately 85 sections per year at present); maintaining and coordinating the curriculum for the ESL sequence; hiring and supervising part-time lecturers teaching ESL courses; supervising full-time lecturers (currently 10) teaching ESL courses; providing training and support to other faculty who serve ESL students; coordinating university-wide placement and orientation of ESL students during the academic year and the summer; serving as ESL liaison with BU schools and colleges beyond the College of Arts & Sciences; and teaching to a degree commensurate with the position’s other responsibilities. Reporting to the Director of the Writing Program, the Director of ESL will participate as well in the broader administration of the Writing Program.

The Director of ESL will also have a faculty appointment at the rank of Master Lecturer with an initial term of five years, with the possibility and expectation of renewal for additional five-year terms. The position requires a Ph.D. and scholarly record in Second Language Writing, Applied Linguistics, Rhetoric and Composition, or other closely related field, as well as experience in administration and the teaching of undergraduate writing to ESL/multilingual students.

Awarded the Conference on College Composition and Communication Certificate of Excellence in 2017, the Writing Program is a central contributor to the university’s undergraduate teaching mission. More information about the program is available at http://www.bu.edu/writingprogram/.
