Position Description:

Dean, Boston University School of Theology

Boston University is seeking the next Dean of its School of Theology (STH). The Dean of STH will lead the school to foster academic and educational excellence in accordance with its mission to: “pursue knowledge of God, cultivate leaders for communities of faith, enrich the academy, and seek peace with justice in a diverse and interconnected world.” The Dean, who reports to the University Provost and Chief Academic Officer, works collaboratively with the other academic deans and the University’s senior leadership and represents STH to students, alumni, donors, and the community.

At its founding, STH was based on the marriage of academic rigor and social justice. These founding principles remain vital and effective nearly two centuries later. Consistent with the strategic plans of Boston University and STH, the school embodies the highest academic, intellectual and ethical standards. Our faculty combine academic rigor with community engagement on real world problems that is evident in their scholarship and teaching. This combination, termed “engaged scholarship” is a hallmark of STH. Our faculty and student body represent great strength in ethnic, gender, and theological diversity. BU’s STH is not a place where everyone thinks alike, but a place where students of all backgrounds are challenged, and ultimately strengthened, by their exposure to different ideas and people.

Boston University has a rich tradition dedicated to inclusion and social justice. We are proud of our record of inclusiveness. The School of Theology includes enhancing the diversity of its faculty as part of the first element of its strategic goals. We are dedicated to increasing the participation of all talented students and are committed to equipping religious leaders to serve effectively in churches and other communities of faith, public agencies, and educational institutions around the world.

The candidate chosen will have a distinguished record of professional achievement as a scholar, teacher, and leader, a compelling vision for the future of theological education, and a demonstrated commitment of service to church, academy, and community. This person must meet Boston University’s criteria for appointment as a full professor or the equivalent senior level commensurate with their expertise and experience (i.e., Professor of the Practice). Additionally, the successful candidate must have administrative experience in a complex organization and gifts for strengthening denominational ties. Accordingly, the successful candidate will demonstrate competence in carrying out educational initiatives that foster equity, diversity, and inclusion in all aspects of the learning community, consistent with Boston University’s commitment to providing a supportive and respectful environment that embodies our prophetic ideals. This competence involves skills in negotiating democratic processes that are open and responsive to cultural and philosophical differences inevitably found within an intellectually vibrant theological school in a university setting.
