Position Description:    

Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the ATLAS Software Group that leads the development of Athena, the application framework of the ATLAS collaboration at CERN, with a focus on enabling concurrency on modern heterogeneous architectures and on optimizing HPC workflows. This role will collaborate between the Physics and Computing Research Divisions.


What You Will Do:

  • Share overlapping responsibilities on ATLAS and the Center for Computational Excellence.

  • Collaborate with ATLAS physicists and computer scientists to design and implement new concurrent versions of ATLAS software workflows including event reconstruction, and pileup simulation and digitization, targeting heterogeneous architectures such as GPUs.

  • As a part of CCE, port GPU demonstrator testbeds such as Patatrack, WireCell Toolkit, and FastCaloSim to several portability platforms including Kokkos, SyCL, and Alpaka

  • Develop and evaluate metrics for benchmarking the solutions.

  • Provide recommendations to HEP experiments as they transition to heterogeneous computing environments.


What is Required: 

  • Ph.D. in Physics, Applied Physics, Computer Science, or related field with less than 2 years of experience since Ph.D. thesis.

  • Experience with HEP software development.

  • Proficiency in modern scientific computing programming.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, and to contribute to a large software project.


What We Prefer:

  • Experience in any of the following areas: concurrency techniques, software design, software engineering, the Geant4 simulation toolkit, the ROOT software framework, pattern recognition algorithms, machine learning algorithms and libraries, data analytics frameworks, software performance evaluation and optimization, HPC systems, GPGPU programming including CUDA, SyCL, Kokkos, Alpaka, OpenMP, OpenACC, FPGA programming.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2-year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds, and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
