Description:

*** The account for , Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory - Nuclear Science has expired, and no new applications is accepted. ***

Berkeley Lab’s Nuclear Science Division (NS) has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to join their Relativistic Nuclear Collisions (RNC) program.

In this role, you will be expected to work on both physics analysis and instrumentation aspects of high energy nuclear physics.

The RNC group has a strong involvement in both the physics analysis and instrumentation in experiments such as STAR, ALICE, sPHENIX, and the future EIC.  RNC has successfully led the Heavy Flavor Tracker (HFT) development and physics analysis for STAR experiment. Currently RNC is heavily involved in both the ALICE ITS upgrade and sPHENIX MVTX instrumentation. Work on the future Electron-Ion-Collider has also started. We develop both the instrumentation and analysis techniques to extend the reach of experimental nuclear physics.

What You Will Do:

  • Contribute to the physics analysis of ongoing RNC activities of the Postdoc’s choosing.

  • Contribute to the ongoing MAPS silicon tracker instrumentation projects and R&D for EIC.

  • Exercise independent judgment and contribute in an original manner at the professional level.

  • Publish papers/reports in refereed journals, and make oral presentations of work.

  • Report results to supervisor.

What Is Required:

  • Recent Ph.D. in Nuclear/High-Energy Physics or a related discipline within the last 3 years.

  • Experience with data analysis.

  • Willingness in building hardware from ground-up to achieve physics goals.

  • Proficiency in written and oral dissemination of scientific results.

  • Ability to work independently and in collaboration in a research environment

Requested Application Materials:

  • Curriculum Vitae.

  • Statement of research experience and interests.

  • Reference Letters - Arrange to have 3 letters of reference sent to Dr. Nu Xu at nxu@lbl.gov with a cc to Administrator Lady Bonifacio at lbonifacio@lbl.gov.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by close of business on June 15, 2020.

Notes:

  • This is a full time, M-F, exempt from overtime pay (monthly paid), 2 year postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 3 years of paid postdoctoral experience. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.

  • This position may be subject to a background check. Any convictions will be evaluated to determine if they directly relate to the responsibilities and requirements of the position. Having a conviction history will not automatically disqualify an applicant from being considered for employment.

  • Work will be primarily performed at Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, 1 Cyclotron Road, Berkeley, CA.
