Position Description:    

Chapman University’s Schmid College of Science and Technology seeks applications for a part-time Physical Biochemistry Lab lecturer who has the ability to teach undergraduate students, beginning August 2020. Physical Biochemistry Lab is taken by science majors in the fields of chemistry and biochemistry. Qualifications: 
 â€¢ A M.S. or Ph.D. in structural biology and/or biophysics. At minimum, a bachelor’s degree with 2+ years of hand-on laboratory experience in biochemistry or biophysical       chemistry is required. 
 â€¢ Previous experience with college-level biochemistry/chemistry instruction is preferred. • Expertise in structural biology and/or protein biophysics is preferred. • Ability to        communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing.
 â€¢ Strong commitment to student learning, quality teaching and academic excellence. 
ʉۢ Ability to motivate and teach students of diverse learning styles and backgrounds.
 â€¢ Ability to operate laboratory equipment and maintain a safe working environment. 
ʉۢ Willingness to acquire new skills.
 â€¢ The instructor should be familiar with at least some of the following techniques: Protein crystallography (including using how to use ccp4i or Phenix), circular dichroism,       fluorescence and FTIR spectroscopies, fluorescence microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and enzyme kinetics 
 â€¢ General working understanding of advanced biomolecular spectroscopy instrumentation is expected.  

Responsibilities: 
The candidate is expected to teach one section of the  Physical Biochemistry Lab, which will have approximately ten students. The laboratory focuses on physical methods to characterize biomolecules. Job responsibilities include: supervising students in person in the laboratory, communicating with students via email, holding one hour of in person and/or remote office hours outside of the laboratory time per week, grading student assignments, and communicating with the course supervisor at least once a week. The position may also require tasks related to remote instruction during or outside of the normal laboratory time.
