The Robert J. Margolis, MD, Center for Health Policy at Duke University has an opening for a Research Assistant or Senior Research Assistant in health care delivery and payment reform. The work site for this position is anticipated to be the Duke-Margolis office in Washington, DC; however, candidates based in Durham, NC will also be considered and are encouraged to apply.

The Robert J. Margolis, MD, Center for Health Policy at Duke University seeks to address critical health policy challenges and deliver practical, innovative, and evidence-based solutions to improve health and the value of health care. The interdisciplinary nature of Duke-Margolis brings together policy experts, researchers, health care professionals, and students from across Duke’s schools of medicine, nursing, law, public policy, business, and engineering, and fosters extensive relationships with stakeholders both internal and external. These relationships span foundations, private sector organizations, state and federal governments, and global entities. The Center fosters excellence, leadership, and scholarship at every level.

This Research Assistant/ Senior Research Assistant position will support Center projects with research, writing, and analysis with a focus on health care delivery and payment reform. The individual in this role may also collaborate on projects spanning a broad range of topics, including: COVID-19 testing and surveillance, medical product development and innovation, real-world data and evidence, medical device and pharmaceutical policy, global health, health systems transformation, comparative effectiveness research, patient-centered outcomes research, patient engagement, and the intersection of scientific and regulatory advancement with broader US health policy reforms.

Primary responsibilities will include conducting background research, performing literature reviews, drafting summary documents, extensive writing for a range of deliverable types (e.g., policy briefs, white papers, blog posts), and supporting Center events and convening. This will include support for project activities through coordination, logistics management, and some administrative tasks.

Education/Experience Requirements:

Bachelor’s degree required. Prior professional research experience in academia, government, or a research organization is preferred.

Applicants may be considered for the Senior Research Assistant level if they have the following minimum education and experience:

  • Bachelor's degree and at least 3 years of relevant work experience. OR
  • Master's degree in a relevant field (health policy, public policy, public administration, public health, health economics, etc.). Master’s degree with at least one year of related work experience is preferred.

Knowledge/Skills Requirements:

  • Strong research and writing experience is required.
  • Familiarity with current trends and regulations in payment and delivery system reform is required.
  • Policy research skills, including the ability to synthesize content from a broad range of sources, are required. Some data analysis capabilities would be preferred.
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability to transform complicated information into easy to understand materials are required.
  • Ability to interact professionally with high-level individuals and organizations is required.
  • Training or experience in the fields of health policy, public policy, public health, data science, or patient safety are preferred.
  • Administrative, project coordination, and management experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively is required. 

This position will be renewable annually upon funding availability from the Center. Candidates seeking work experience prior to pursuing graduate or other professional school training are encouraged to apply.
