The McHenry Lab at Duke, located within the Department of Psychology & Neuroscience, is recruiting an Associate in Research to help initiate the new lab and conduct research on grant projects related to rodent social behaviour and systems circuit neuroscience. The lab uses a combination of circuit-based strategies and custom engineered designs to investigate how social information is encoded in neural circuits that regulate motivational and emotional states. The lab uses state-of-the-art techniques, including deep-brain calcium imaging (2-photon in vivo microscopy) with single-cell resolution and optogenetics, to monitor and manipulate the activity of neurons with anatomical and molecular precision, in awake behaving mice. Collectively, these studies will provide insights into social and motivational processes that are disrupted across a range of conditions, such as major depression, reproductive mood disorders, homeostasis, and autism spectrum disorders.  

The candidate must have a Ph.D. in neuroscience in a basic research field with utilized rodent models routinely, including behavioural and computational studies. The ideal candidate will have a strong background and experimental skills related to rodent handling, behavior (freely moving and/or head fixed), motivation/reward/behavioral systems, surgical approach, engineering (e.g. soldering, microcontrollers, assembly of rigs) and most importantly strong computer programming skills (Python, MATLAB), and experience working with big data sets. 

The applicant must be detail-oriented, independent when need be, proactive, well-organized, and able to manage multiple and changing priorities as needed to move experiments and the research program forward. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, a strong commitment to research and scientific ethic, and a positive attitude are required for this team-based environment. The candidate must be able to work with attention to detail and be proactive and responsive to lab goals in a timely manner. The candidate must be flexible and willing to help train others in pipelines and procedures. The candidate will have the opportunity to tailor their training to accomplish milestones towards their long-term career goals. The PI will assist the candidate in professional and technical development to aid in their advancement. The candidate will have the opportunity to publish first authored and co-authored papers, apply for grants, and learn valuable new neuroscience skills (e.g. in vivo 2photon imaging and advanced microscopy, optogenetics, genetic targeting) and computation skills that will be relevant to advancing their career in science or industry. The individual will also interact with collaborators to expand their research network and skills, in areas outside the expertise of the PI, when possible. 

Work Performed 

The main role of the individual will be to help the PI initiate new and standard computer programming and analysis pipelines for big data sets (behavior and imaging) that can be reproducible and easily modified for future tweaks and needs. The individual will also assist in the assembly of custom recording equipment and programs to implement new behavioral or imaging assays. The PI will provide training in surgical approach and imaging equipment, and then the individual will work with these items in a more independent fashion, when needed. Other general expectations or duties: Confer with principal investigator to review data, develop plans for research experiments, prepare figures and papers for publication or grants, and make modifications to existing procedures, programs, and techniques to meet the needs of the particular studies as required. Perform a variety of complex technical duties involved in conducting physical and other research laboratory tests and experiments to obtain data for research purposes and assemble data sets from experimental results. Experiments may include setting up instruments, material, and apparatus and operation of laboratory equipment required for specific tests, mouse surgery, mouse behavior, histology, imaging, and optogenetics, etc... Must display a high level of accuracy, efficiency, integrity, reproducibility, and take self-initiative. Due to the nature of the animal work, the candidate must at certain times (e.g. post-surgery, recording) work around the schedule and needs for the animals for the well-being of the animals or experimental protocol. The candidate will also be able to plan protected time off and vacation. The above statements describe the general nature of work being performed by individuals assigned to this classification.
