Pomona College invites applications and nominations for an advanced Associate or Full Professor level faculty position to serve as Chair of the Department of English. At a moment when the department is in conversation about diversifying the major as well as building on its current strengths, the search committee seeks a dynamic leader, enthusiastic about advancing the study of literature as both a disciplinary and interdisciplinary practice, both within the department and in the larger field. Administrative or chairing experience is a plus. We have a strong preference for a scholar with research specializations in one or more of the following areas: African American, Arab American, Asian American, Latinx, Chicanx, Native American literatures, Multi-ethnic Literatures, and/or Critical Race Theory. We seek to attract, develop, and retain faculty that contribute to the cultural, linguistic, experiential, and diverse curricular offerings.

Send statement of interest, short (750 word each, maximum) statements of teaching and diversity philosophy and administrative vision, and a list of three professional references with contact information (email only). Review of applications will begin on January 8, 2021. We will be interviewing via video conferencing during the months of February and March.

Pomona is a highly selective private liberal arts college with an enrollment of approximately 1630 students, all undergraduates, and a student/faculty ratio of eight to one. Recognized as one of the nation's premier liberal arts colleges, Pomona offers instruction in all major fields of the fine arts, humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, and is strongly committed to the value of a residential educational community. Pomona College and the English Department support equal access to higher education. Of the students admitted into the class of 2024, 58.8% self-identify as domestic students of color, 13.6% international and 20.7% are first generation college students. The successful candidate will have the ability to teach and mentor exceptional students of diverse backgrounds—utilizing pedagogical practices that are rigorous, inclusive, and which promote academic equity.

Pomona is the founding member of The Claremont Colleges, a unique constellation of five small undergraduate colleges and two graduate institutions located in beautiful southern California near the foothills of the San Gabriel mountains, about 35 miles east of Los Angeles. Students of the Claremont Colleges can cross-register for courses at any of the colleges, and have access to a shared library system containing over 2 million volumes. Pomona students thus enjoy the advantages of personalized instruction and close faculty-student interaction in a small liberal arts college setting, combined with the intellectual and extracurricular resources typically found at much larger universities.
