Position Description: |
College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Cornell University Ithaca, NY
POSITION: Postdoctoral
Associate STARTING DATE: TBD LOCATION: The Crickard LaboratoryDepartment of Molecular Biology & Genetics Cornell University, Ithaca, NY 14850
SUMMARY: This position involves primary research and related professional activities associated with understanding how DNA binding enzymes preserve genomic integrity. BASIC FUNCTION
AND RESPONSIBILITY: Conduct basic
biochemical research on DNA motor proteins. Our work seeks to understand the
biophysical and biochemical properties of enzymes that operate in DNA repair
pathways. The focus of the laboratory is
to specifically understand how homologous recombination proteins prevent the
development of human cancers. Research in this position will lead to the
publication of articles in peer-reviewed journals, and presentations at
scientific meetings. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The role of the Postdoctoral Associate is 100% research. The job is to engage in cutting edge research and the duties will be broken down as follows. Conducting biochemical experiments (~45 %) It is expected that the candidate will take leadership on a project in the laboratory related to the process of strand invasion during human homologous recombination (HR). This project will require biochemical purification and characterization of enzymes required for this process. The project will also include using single molecule assays to understand how enzymes within the HR pathway cooperate. Experience with protein expression and purification is required for this position. However, experience with single molecule approaches is not. Additionally, experience with structural biology approaches, and protein purification from insect cells is a plus. Data analysis (~25%) Data analysis involves analysis of single molecule data, including image processing, statistical analysis of single molecule data, and the organization of figures for publication. Experience with computer programming language(s) is a plus, but not required for the position. Student mentoring (~5%) Mentoring
both undergraduates and graduate students in the laboratory. Help the PI in
troubleshooting experimental problems encountered by students. Professional development (~25%) Provide intellectual leadership on laboratory projects. Including the development of novel hypothesis in the area of homologous recombination. Draft and submit manuscripts for publication in top-level peer reviewed scientific journals. Present results at national or international meetings, conferences, and popular seminar series. Engage in intellectual life within the MBG department, and Cornell University as a whole. The candidate will also be expected to participate in, through presentation and attendance, the recombination, replication, and repair group meetings that are available here at Cornell. Qualifications: PhD in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology or related field. Salary: Commensurate with experience Supervision: Brooks Crickard, Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics Application Procedure: Submit online to https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/17611 a Curriculum Vitae, a Research Plan, 3 references, and a Statement of Contribution to Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (1 page).
