The Chair for Theoretical Physics III (Professors Johanna Erdmenger and Haye Hinrichsen and Dr René Meyer) at the Department of Physics and Astronomy of Würzburg University invites applications for the position of a

Scientist (m/f/x) in Theoretical Physics

for research in the area of gauge/gravity duality and its relations to black hole physics, quantum information theory and quantum dynamics and/or its applications in condensed matter physics and particle physics. The position is for an initial period of three years and can be extended once for an additional period of up to three years.

The successful candidate will perform independent research in the areas given above. Collaborative research and joint grant applications with the existing research team at the Chair will be highly appreciated. There is the possibility of obtaining the German `Habilitation’ degree. A small amount of teaching is required, for instance by independently teaching courses relating to the research topics given above, within the international master physics programme at Würzburg University, as well as by supervising master and bachelor students. The position is ideally suited for a current postdoc who would like to qualify further towards more senior academic positions.

The position is fixed term. A PhD degree and some postdoctoral research experience as well as teaching experience are required. The starting date will be in September or October of 2021. We are particularly committed to the advancement of women in science, and female candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants with disabilities will be preferentially considered in case of equivalent qualification. The Chair for Theoretical Physics III at Julius-Maximilians University Würzburg is internationally known for its research on gauge/gravity duality and its applications. It hosts scientists working on fields closely related to the focus of this position, such as string theory, AdS/CFT, gravity, quantum information theory, theoretical condensed matter physics and particle physics. Moreover, it provides a stimulating international research environment with numerous international visitors, and organizes workshops and conferences in areas relevant to this position. The Chair is an active member of the Cluster of Excellence "Complexity and Topology in Quantum Matter" (ct.qmat, Würzburg and Dresden) and collaborates with scientists in condensed matter and quantum optics.
