Position Description:    

The Department of Mechanical Engineering at Boston University invites applications for a Professor of the Practice position beginning in July 2021. The successful candidate will be responsible for, and committed to, delivering excellent courses at all levels in Mechanical Engineering, with particular emphasis on advanced courses in engineering design as it relates to manufacturing, product development and robotics. Applicants with significant expertise in manufacturing and manufacturing systems are encouraged. There will also be opportunities to contribute in other areas.

Applicants for the position must have a Masters or PhD in Mechanical Engineering or a related field. Only individuals with exceptional and unique experiences in industrial or clinical settings that match the teaching needs of the department will be considered for the position. Demonstrated excellence in teaching applicable courses will be considered advantageous, although individuals with a track record of public speaking and industrial leadership will also be entertained.

This position is a limited-term, non-tenure track appointment. Salary will be provided for the 9-month academic year. Possibilities of support in the summer include summer classes, and various administrative roles. Instructional faculty in the Mechanical Engineering department are expected to teach multiple courses per year (typically four to six) with multiple sections of the same course counting towards that total. These positions come with full benefits.

The MechE department has 46 primary faculty members, many of whom hold secondary appointments in other Departments and Divisions within the College. Undergraduate and graduate enrollments are approximately 575 and 250 students, respectively. MechE faculty also advise PhD students enrolled in programs based in other departments and the Divisions. Our BS degree in MechE allows for optional departmental concentrations in aerospace engineering and manufacturing engineering and college-wide concentrations in energy technologies, nanotechnology, and technology innovation. At the graduate level, the Mechanical Engineering department offers Masters degrees in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design and Manufacturing and Robotics and Autonomous Systems (college-wide) as well as a PhD in Mechanical Engineering.
