The University of Connecticut (UConn)'s Department of English is pleased to invite applications for a non-tenure track faculty position at the rank of Assistant Professor in Residence at the UConn Waterbury campus. The Department of English is among the top 20 departments in the nation. It has 60 faculty members, 350 undergraduate majors and 60 graduate students. 

The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective teaching,  innovative courses and instruction methods, and mentoring of students. Successful candidates will also be expected to demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the commitment to, and support of, diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and provide leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.

UConn Waterbury serves a diverse population of  students who commute to campus from the surrounding areas.  Located in the heart of Waterbury, this campus offers the chance to teach a variety of courses to our growing cohort of English majors.

The ideal candidate will be an engaging and excellent teacher of American literature and culture who is eager to join the faculty at the Waterbury campus and will teach a range of undergraduate courses, which will include primarily introductory and advanced courses in American literature as well as other courses in the English major. 


Completion of all requirements for the PhD in English with a specialization in American Literature or American Studies, or a closely related field, by the start date of employment; evidence of a strong commitment to undergraduate education; experience teaching college-level literature and culture courses; and commitment to working with a diverse student body.


Evidence of engagement with current trends in American Studies and the teaching of American literature, particularly in poetry, ethnic literature, African American literature and/or Native American literature. Ideally the candidate will also have experience teaching diverse populations of students; integrating multicultural experiences into instructional methods; and providing leadership in developing pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.


This is a full-time, nine-month, non-tenure track position that carries a seven course teaching load or its equivalent, in both lecture and seminar formats, across the academic year. The successful candidate may also advise and mentor undergraduate students in the major and minor, and perform service to the department and/or campus as requested.  The appointment has an anticipated start date of August 23, 2021. The position may be renewed annually based on performance, funding and needs of the department and college.  Salary is competitive based upon qualifications and experience.  The successful candidate’s primary academic appointment will be at the Waterbury Campus.
