Occupational Summary This is a one-year initial postdoctoral position with the possibility of renewal upon review of grant funding. This position steers the work of the Advance Care Planning and Healthy Living Through Faith program at Duke Divinity School, which seeks to reduce racial disparities in advance care planning and to continue nurturing the capacity of the African American Advance Care Planning/Palliative Care Network to lead efforts to overcome racial inequities across healthcare.

Work Performed Funded by the John and Wauna Harman Foundation, in partnership with the Center for Practical Bioethics, this position at Duke Divinity School will provide key leadership and oversight of the following:

¬Education and Resourcing for African American clergy and congregations about the basics of advance care planning, palliative care, and hospice. - Oversee the collection of practical materials for African-American Advanced Care Planning initiatives - Identify areas and opportunities of need for the creation of new practical and faith-based materials for future African-American Advanced Care Planning initiatives - Direct the creation, development and maintenance of the ACP-HTLF website, which will house relevant materials, resources, and research for the program - Liaising with the Office of Black Church Studies and other groups on and off campus

Maintenance and Strengthening of the African American Advance Care Planning/Palliative Care Network - Maintain regular communications with members of the AA ACP/PCN network (a group of advance care planning and palliative care experts advocating for greater access and participation of African Americans and other communities of color) - Design and oversee the execution of a communication strategy for the program and network, including distribution of a regular newsletter, establishing and maintaining a social media presence, and working with Duke Divinity Communications to share key developments and stories from the program with the DDS community and beyond - Organize and execute the annual AA ACP/PC network gathering meeting at Duke Divinity School each spring - Coordinate the details of the Payne Lectureship in connection with the annual AA ACP/PC network gathering

Mapping the research landscape around advance care planning for African Americans and other communities of color - Establish regular communication with lead researchers in the field - In collaboration with Dr. Smith and other researchers, articulate the most pressing research questions that are being (or need to be) pursued and identify key opportunities for research collaboration - Oversee the gathering of research materials on African-American end-of-life care and the creation of a database where such materials can be housed and accessed by network members and researchers - Contribute to research landscape in ways that align with personal research trajectory

Additional Responsibilities - Represent the ACP-HLTF in appropriate settings - Seek out and work with PI to apply for a minimum of three potential grant funding sources (for the overall program and specific projects/programs) - Prepare in conjunction with the PI reporting to the John and Wauna Harman Foundation - Provide research and teaching assistance to the PI, as appropriate (Dr. Smith) - Provides day-to-day management of the program (e.g., emails, travel arrangements, liaison with institutional partners) - Participate as desired in the life and activities of the Duke Divinity School - Other duties as assigned Education/Training: - PhD, ThD or equivalent terminal degree in Religion, Theology, Bioethics, Social Ethics, Public Health, Health Equity, or a related field

Departmental Preferences: Experience with program development and oversight is strongly preferred.
