The Triangle University Nuclear Laboratory (TUNL) is a Department of Energy Center of Excellence in Nuclear Physics. TUNL seeks to hire a full-time Research Scientist to lead its research program in the areas of nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics to be carried out at the High Intensity Gamma-Ray Source (HIGS). The focus of the program is on the low-excitation structure of medium-mass and heavy nuclei, specifically on how nuclear shapes and shell structure evolve on the proton- and neutron-rich sides of stability. This work directly impacts the understanding of the nucleosynthesis of heavy nuclei and also impacts fundamental interactions. The successful applicant is expected to have considerable experience in nuclear physics research with photons, specifically using all the techniques associated with nuclear resonance fluorescence. Experience with the development of new detection systems, preferably including work with large gamma-ray detector arrays, is required as is familiarity with digital electronics as well as high-performance data handling and processing, including Monte Carlo simulations, massive parallel data processing, modern Bayesian inference and machine-learning techniques. The person holding this position is expected to lead a scientific program that focuses on developing gamma-ray and particle detection systems of relevance not only for the HIGS program, but also for complementary measurements at national user facilities. The candidate is expected to pursue funding opportunities, aid in development of proposals related to the program, mentor post-docs, and educate graduate and undergraduate students.
