Postdoctoral Associate, School of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Cornell University

The School of Civil and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University seeks a postdoctoral associate. The position will be located at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, USA. The position is initially available for one year with a potential renewal for a total of two years.

We have developed a novel computational framework to improve understanding of the underlying dynamics that lead to escalating regional hurricane disaster risk, and to support design and analysis of public policy interventions to address them. The framework explicitly considers perspectives of and interactions among multiple key stakeholders (government, primary insurers, and homeowners), and multiple diverse interventions (e.g., home strengthening, acquisition, and insurance). It includes a computable general equilibrium model to relate hurricane damage to gross domestic product, labor wages, savings, etc. We envision the person hired in this position to extend this framework to create an optimization model that represents the government’s interest in controlling hurricane risk by balancing economic growth, equity, and regional loss exposure to determine how to allocate funds for insurance subsidies, mitigation grants and acquisition programs.

Candidates should hold a Ph.D. in civil engineering, operations research, computer science or closely related field. To apply: Application materials must be submitted on-line through AcademicJobsOnline at https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/18793

Through this website, applicants are to submit a curriculum vitae, graduate transcript, and the names and contact information for at least three references. The successful applicant anticipated hire date is September 1, 2022 (or earlier based on candidate’s availability). Review of applications will begin immediately and will continue until the position is filled. Questions can be directed to cee_search@cornell.edu
