Tenure Track Assistant or Associate Professor in Directing

The Theater and Dance Department at Macalester College invites applications for a tenure track faculty member in Directing at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, untenured (short track). Candidates will have directing as a primary area of expertise. Additional experience across the performing arts (dance, digital media, film, installation, opera, performance art); new play development; artistic lineages outside of the mainstream canon; and specific acting/directing techniques (Viewpoints, Suzuki, Stanislavsky’s late method of psychophysical actions, and so forth) is highly desirable. Demonstrated familiarity with critiques of cultural and social representations onstage is expected. The faculty member will be working in the new, state-of-the-art Theater and Dance facilities, completed in January 2019.

Successful candidates will be active professional directors who are artistically curious with portfolios in theater and other performing arts disciplines. They should be fluent in current trends in performance, including digital and media practices, so as to best connect with the next generation of performing artists. We are particularly interested in candidates ready to navigate styles other than American realism and eager to engage in theatrical experimentation. Strong candidates will be prepared to work in traditional and alternative or site-specific performance spaces, as well as immersive performance. Ability to teach studio courses in various levels of directing and acting, as well as in directing history and theories is a must. Our new colleague will be ready to participate in the intellectual and artistic life of Macalester College, as well as in the many aspects of faculty governance. The ideal candidate will be familiar with and eager to develop inclusive pedagogy to address the needs of our diverse student body and eager to help us create a more inclusive Macalester. International professional experience is a plus, as that aligns with Macalester’s commitment to internationalism. We welcome applications from candidates from underrepresented groups.

QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants should have an MFA/PhD in hand. The ideal candidate will have a minimum 3 years of teaching, an extensive professional portfolio, leadership experience, and be prepared to submit their tenure dossier in 4 years at most. Candidates without a terminal degree but with distinguished professional portfolio and demonstrated teaching experience may be considered. Previous employment in higher education and experience in academic leadership strongly preferred. The 5-course teaching assignment consists of a combination of studio, academic, and production courses (directing mainstage).

Theater and Dance faculty are active artists in their fields, as the Twin Cities have more theater companies per capita than any other urban center in the country besides New York City. Prominent local companies include the Children’s Theatre Company; the Guthrie Theater; James Sewell Ballet; the Jungle Theater; Mixed Blood; Penumbra Theatre; Pillsbury House Theatre; Ragamala Dance Company; and TU Dance, among many others.

Macalester College is a highly selective, private liberal arts college in the vibrant Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area, with a population of approximately three million people and home to numerous colleges and universities, including the University of Minnesota. Macalester's diverse student body comprises over 2000 undergraduates from all 50 states and the District of Columbia and 98 countries. The College maintains a longstanding commitment to academic excellence with a special emphasis on internationalism, multiculturalism, and service to society. As an Equal Opportunity employer supportive of affirmative efforts to achieve diversity among its faculty, Macalester College strongly encourages applications from women and members of underrepresented minority groups.

Macalester College is committed to student and faculty diversity, equity, and inclusion. Strong candidates will have a record of experience or demonstrated commitment to teaching diverse students. In their EDI statement, applicants should discuss past experiences and/or potential future contributions to inclusive excellence in the areas of research, teaching, service, and/or outreach, as well as reflect upon their experience and vision regarding the teaching and mentorship of students from diverse backgrounds.

Candidates are encouraged to read more about Macalester at https://www.macalester.edu/about/mission/ and to address in their letters of application the ways in which they could contribute to our institutional mission and goals.

Complete applications include a cover letter with a statement of interest in Macalester and the liberal arts; curriculum vitae; EDI statement (see above); a statement of teaching philosophy; description of artistic research interests; web links to portfolio and/or CD of work samples (10-15); three recommendation letters; and evidence of accomplishment in teaching.
