Postdoctoral Associate, Productivity and Climate
Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management

The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business invites applicants for a Postdoctoral Associate with a 1-year renewable term position in our Applied Economics and Policy area, intended for placement in the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied Economics and Management. The start date of this position will be in the Spring/Summer of 2022. The position will be based in Ithaca, NY.
Responsibilities of the position include (1) evaluate the returns of Research and
Development (R&D) on Total Factor Productivity (TFP) growth in US
agriculture, (2) assess the effects of future anthropogenic climate change on
US agricultural TFP growth, and (3) assess the R&D investment needed to
counterbalance projected climate change effects in the coming decades, and (4)
contribute towards updating a pre-existing database of state-level agricultural
R&D investments and TFP estimates in coordination with economists at the US
Department of Agriculture (USDA) Economic Research Service (ERS). The
Postdoctoral Research Associate will work closely with Professors Ariel
Ortiz-Bobea (Cornell Dyson) and Robert G. Chambers (University of Maryland) under
a new grant funded by USDA titled “R&D and agricultural productivity in a
changing climate”.
The ideal candidate will possess a PhD in economics,
agricultural and resource economics or related field, with experience working
with R&D and productivity data and/or climate data and R programming. A strong record of success conducting
independent research and scholarly activities, including publication in peer-reviewed
journals is highly desired. This position requires excellent verbal and written
communications skills. Demonstrated interest in research
focusing on productivity analysis and climate change is strongly preferred.
In the context of her/his
responsibilities, the Postdoctoral Associate will interact with members of the
OECD Network on Agricultural Productivity and the Environment (https://www.oecd.org/agriculture/topics/network-agricultural-productivity-and-environment/), an international group of government and academic
economists working to improve the measurement of agricultural productivity by
incorporating environmental factors such as environmental protection and
climate. The network meets regularly at the OECD headquarters in Paris, France.
The Cornell SC Johnson College of Business
(established on July 1, 2016) combines three Schools: the Samuel Curtis Johnson
Graduate School of Management (Johnson), the Charles H. Dyson School of Applied
Economics and Management (Dyson), and the School of Hotel Administration (Hotel
School). Dyson houses a top-ranked undergraduate business program as well as
graduate programs that award Ph.D., M.S. and M.P.S. degrees. Areas of faculty
research include management; environmental, energy and resource economics; food
and agricultural economics; and international and development economics.
Faculty members in the Dyson School frequently collaborate with colleagues in
Computer and Information Sciences, Economics, Engineering, Natural Resources,
and other units on campus.
