INTRODUCTION

The University of Connecticut (UConn) is pleased to invite applications for a faculty position in the Department of Physics in Theoretical Condensed Matter Physics at the rank of full-time tenure-track Assistant Professor to begin August 2022. While we are seeking qualified candidates with strong research interests in dynamics of interacting quantum matter, machine learning and materials informatics, quantum sensing and technology, and other synergistic growing areas, candidates from all areas of condensed matter physics will be considered.

The Physics Department has 33 tenure-track faculty members, 184 undergraduate majors, and 84 graduate students and has recognized groups actively engaged in research in condensed matter, atomic physics, astronomy, nuclear, particle physics, geophysics, and physics education. Some areas of particular departmental strength include strong collaborations with the Institute of Materials Science at UConn, the Simons Foundation, the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, as well as Brookhaven, Argonne, Lawrence Berkeley, SLAC, Los Alamos, Oak Ridge, Fermi, and Jefferson National Labs. The Department recently moved to a fully-renovated building, which includes research labs, offices, theory suites, meeting/seminar rooms, and state-of-the-art Studio Physics teaching labs.

The successful candidate will be expected to establish a strong research program and contribute to impactful research and scholarship through extramural funding, high quality publications, impact as measured through citations, and national recognition such as honorific awards. The successful candidate will share a deep commitment to effective instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels, including Studio Physics, innovative courses and instruction methods, and mentoring of students in research, outreach, and professional development. Successful candidates will also be expected to broaden participation among members of under-represented groups; demonstrate through research, teaching, and/or public engagement the commitment to, and support of, diversity in the learning experience; integrate multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Earned Ph.D. in Physics or related field; equivalent foreign degrees are acceptable.
• Demonstrated ability to initiate and lead an independent research program in theoretical condensed matter physics.
• An established record of publications in major scientific journals.
• Evidence of potential for excellence in teaching.
• A deep commitment to promoting diversity through their academic and research programs

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Ability to establish a strong research program
• A leadership role in active, ongoing research in theoretical condensed matter Physics
• At least two years of post-doctoral experience.
• Strong teaching skills.
• Ability to contribute through research, teaching, and/or public engagement to the diversity and excellence of the learning experience.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This is a full-time, 9-month, tenure-track position with an anticipated start date of August 23, 2022. The successful candidate’s academic appointment will be at the Storrs campus. Faculty may also be asked to teach at one of UConn’s regional campuses as part of their ordinary workload. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
