Assistant Research Professor - 2D Crystal Consortium (2DCC)

Computational Materials Scientist - Assistant Research Professor

The Materials Research Institute at the Pennsylvania State University seeks outstanding applicants for a non-tenure track Assistant Research Professor position focused on materials theory and simulation as applied to the synthesis and characterization of two-dimensional (2D) materials. This position is part of the NSF Materials Innovation Platform national facility at Penn State - the 2D Crystal Consortium (2DCC). The 2DCC accelerates the discovery and development of 2D layered chalcogenide films and bulk crystals by advancing the synthesis science of 2D materials and providing investigators at universities, federal laboratories and industry with the infrastructure and human capital to conceive, research, and develop the next generation of materials systems to maintain the United States' pre-eminence in electronic material, device, and component technology. Deep integration of experiment and theory - particularly theory, simulation, and data-driven research focused on materials growth and characterization - is a core component of the 2DCC. Particularly strong candidates may be considered for an appointment at the Associate Research Professor level.

Responsibilities: The Assistant Research Professor will be responsible for performing world-leading computational materials research aligned to the goals of the 2DCC-MIP, including both in-house research by platform members and the support of synthesis research projects by the user community. Rich opportunities will be available for deep collaboration with diverse innovative experimental and complementary theoretical and data-driven efforts in materials growth. The Assistant Research Professor will also assist in the coordination and management of the Materials Innovation Platform, including facilitating the correlation of user simulation, data and theory needs with available theory expertise in the 2DCC, preparation of reports for research sponsors, and scientific outreach to the professional research community.

Requirements: Successful candidates for this position must have a Ph.D. in Physics, Materials Science, Chemistry or a closely related field. A record of computational materials research in collaboration with experiment and expertise in first-principles computational methods are of particular value for the position. They should have a demonstrated record of collaborative research and experience leading and contributing toward multiple projects. This position requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment in support of the goals of the users of the 2DCC. To be considered for this position, applicants should include a curriculum vitae, a cover letter with a summary of relevant skills and experience and contact information for three professional references (name, position title, mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address). Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. This is a fixed term appointment funded for one year from date of hire with excellent possibility for refunding.
