Director of Choral Music and Assistant Professor of Music

The Department of Music at Cornell University invites applications for the position of Director of Choral Music and Assistant Professor (full-time, tenure track). The appointment will commence on July 1, 2022.

Applicants should hold a doctoral degree in music or equivalent professional credentials. The successful candidate will be expected to pursue an artistic and scholarly agenda compatible with the goals of a major research university while demonstrating the requisite artistic vision and administrative skills to guide the Chorus, the Glee Club, and the other ensembles that belong to Cornell’s extensive choral program. The successful candidate is expected to exhibit the potential for a distinguished career as a pedagogue-scholar and performing artist at the national and international level as manifested by performances, recordings, and publications. In addition to possessing outstanding qualifications as a choral conductor, the successful candidate should know how to foster performance in a liberal arts environment and be committed to university-wide engagement in vocal music. Establishing additional non-traditional and/or non-Western choral ensembles is possible, depending on the successful candidate’s interests and available resources.

The successful candidate will play an active role in the musical and intellectual life of the Department by working closely and collaboratively with colleagues. Duties will include directing the Chorus and the Glee Club; coordinating and supervising the choral program; teaching choral conducting and musicianship as necessary; advising students; engaging in service to the Department, College, and University; and participating in other activities according to need and availability. We particularly welcome applications from candidates who can expand the corpus of choral music to which Cornell students are exposed while framing it in pedagogical, historical, and cultural contexts.

Desirable attributes include (but are not limited to) a record of innovative programming, commissioning, and arranging, positive classroom teaching experience, excellent student management, and the ability to work in an interdisciplinary liberal arts community. Since the choral ensembles provide a “lab” for students of composition as well as performance, the successful candidate will provide graduate and advanced undergraduate students with essential resources in topics such as choral conducting, musicianship, composing music for voices, and approaches to vocality.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
