The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) is enhancing its graduate offerings in ‘Autonomous, Intelligent Machines and Systems’ and is seeking adjunct faculty (at the Assistant or Associate level) who will teach a robotics survey course for graduate students that includes introductions to: 1) mechanisms and actuators, 2) sensors and microcontrollers, 3) perception and planning, 4) artificial intelligence, learning and adaptive systems, and/or 5) optimal control.

Work Performed This adjunct faculty position is comprised of one course during the Spring 2021 semester. This course is a 3-credit, graduate level class with at least 10 students. The adjunct professor is expected to prepare an extended syllabus, keep weekly office hours for student mentorship, and develop a course that enhances the other robotics and autonomous systems courses in the ME curriculum. Course materials are to be maintained and provided to the department for internal assessment and review, along with evaluations related to accreditation.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training: A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or closely-related field (in hand) focused on robotic design, fabrication, and/or control. Experience: The successful applicant will have extensive experience in robotics design, simulation, control, and optimization.

Candidates with design and prototyping experience are especially encouraged to apply.

Teaching experience is required (undergraduate and/or graduate); course evaluations are to be provided in application materials.

Skills: Simulation with MATLAB/Simulink, Python, machine learning, ROS.

Physical prototyping expertise with modern desktop manufacturing tools, experience in virtual teaching, extensive background in project-based learning pedagogies, and a track record of commitment to inclusive teaching to diverse groups.
