DEPARTMENT MISSION AND BACKGROUND INFORMATION
THE CORNELL CENTER FOR MATERIALS RESEARCH (CCMR) SUPPORTS FUNDAMENTAL MATERIALS RESEARCH AND SERVES STUDENTS, SCIENTISTS, AND RESEARCHERS FROM CORNELL AND OTHER ACADEMIC, GOVERNMENT, OR INDUSTRY RESEARCHERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

The Cornell Center for Materials Research (CCMR) seeks a research scientist to join our scientific team. The research scientist will become a member of ~12 expert staff in our core facility supporting fundamental materials research. This position will directly support surface analysis techniques (e.g., AFM, XPS), microscopy, spectroscopy. There will be frequent need to develop analytical techniques, find creative solutions to research requests, upgrade and troubleshoot instrumentation. The position is ideal for someone who can adeptly operate scientific instrumentation, optimize sample analyses, and can prioritize multiple, changing tasks. There may be opportunities to participate as a co-author in the preparation of scientific publications. The CCMR Shared Instrumentation Facility is part of the nation’s mid-sized user facility network supporting fundamental materials research and serving students, scientists, and researchers at Cornell and other academic, government, or industry researchers from around the world. www.ccmr.cornell.edu/facilities

Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
  • Develop new protocols and procedures in XPS, AFM, magnetic characterization via PPMS or SQUID, confocal microscopy, thin film deposition, and more.
  • Train researchers on safe and proper use of moderately complex instrumentation. Ensure acquisition of high-quality data.
  • Perform analyses for off-campus users and compile research summary reports as needed.
  • Develop instrument use (standard operating procedures) and lab safety protocols. Document and disseminate procedures via training sessions, online documentation, and video tutorials.
  • Routine preventative maintenance tasks. Procurement of inventory, supplies, and maintenance items.
  • Work with instrument vendors to improve or update instrument capabilities.
  • Cross-train on other facility instruments for backup purposes or for increasing personal knowledge and experience.
  • Monitor records of equipment usage and maintenance for accounting, safety, and billing purposes. 
This is a yearly appointment, which can be renewed annually based on satisfactory performance and availability of funds.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS
  • Ph.D. degree in physical science, materials science, engineering, or similar discipline.
  • 2 to 3 years of relevant experience in at least one of these areas: XPS, AFM, thin film deposition, magnetic characterization, confocal microscopy.
  • Applicants must possess a strong work ethic and self-motivation, ability to work independently as well as collaborate with others.
  •  Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are essential.
  • Excellent computer skills and experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint are required.

PREFERRED SKILLS
  • Surface analysis via XPS, ion sputtering sources, gas-clustered ion beam sources.
  • Atomic force microscopy and related techniques such as force imaging, piezo-force microscopy, electric-force microscopy, magnetic force microscopy.

Pay Ranges:

The hiring rate of pay for the successful candidate will be determined considering the following criteria:

  • Prior relevant work or industry experience.
  • Education level to the extent education is relevant to the position.
  • Academic Discipline (faculty pay ranges reflects 9-month annual salary)
  • Unique applicable skills.
