General Information

Chapman University’s Department of Physical Therapy seeks applications for a tenure-track or tenured Professor position in the Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences. The successful candidate will begin in August 2022.

Continually accredited since 1928, the Department of Physical Therapy has a rich tradition as one of the oldest, continually accredited physical therapy programs in the United States. The program is located on the Rinker Health Science Campus, Irvine, CA. The campus is home to several graduate health science professional programs in Crean College of Health and Behavioral Sciences, including DPT, Pharmacy, Communication Sciences and Disorders, and Physician Assistant.  The campus is distinguished by innovative teaching, learning, and research laboratories and classrooms with an emphasis on inter-professional education, evidence-based practice, and health promotion and injury/disease prevention. The department has state-of-the-art motion analysis and Motek/Grail labs along with other sophisticated research equipment used to understand the complexities of human movement.  It is also the home of the Institute for Interdisciplinary Brain and Behavioral Sciences (Brain Institute) with outstanding neurophysiological and imaging facilities. The Rinker campus is strategically located near numerous healthcare institutions, medical device, and biopharmaceutical companies.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will hold a terminal academic doctorate (Ph.D. D.Sc., or equivalent) in biomechanics, neuroscience, kinesiology, bioengineering, or other fields specializing in human movement, rehabilitation sciences, or related biomedical field.

An emerging record of excellent scholarship for candidates at the assistant professor level or a well-established record of excellent scholarship and a clear potential for or evidence of extramural funding is expected of candidates at the tenured Associate or Professor level. Preference will be given to candidates whose research agenda complements existing research programs within the Department of Physical Therapy and incorporates neuroimaging, neurophysiological, biomechanical and/or computational methods.

Current physical therapy faculty research examines neurological and biomechanical aspects of healthy and disordered movement across the lifespan with particular focus on balance, postural control, gait, and upper extremity function. Strong candidates will also exhibit potential for collaboration with cognitive neuroscience faculty in the rapidly expanding Brain Institute (https://www.chapman.edu/research/institutes-and-centers/brain-institute/research) or with health psychology faculty in the Center for Excellence in Biopsychosocial Approaches to Health (CEBAH) within Crean College (https://www.chapman.edu/crean/research-centers).

Candidates holding a DPT and current licensure as a physical therapist (or eligibility for licensure in California) are highly desirable for this position.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and/or maintain a productive line of research with strong potential for securing extramural funding.
  • Work cooperatively and effectively with physical therapy faculty and Chapman collaborators in the field of neuroscience and human biomechanics to foster collaborative research and enhance the learning experience.
  • Teach in area(s) of expertise in the DPT program. Teaching load is negotiable based on research excellence and extramural funding.  Candidates are expected to mentor physical therapy students and complete professional/academic service. Candidates with the combined PhD and DPT will be expected to maintain clinical licensure.
  • Tenure track faculty are expected to develop and maintain an active research agenda for future tenure consideration and are evaluated on their research/scholarly activity, teaching and service.
