Fall 2021 Particle Physics and Astrophysics Faculty Search

The Particle Physics & Astrophysics (PPA) Department at SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory/Stanford University seeks applicants for faculty appointments in all areas of fundamental particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics, and accelerator science aligned with SLAC’s mission (see https://www6.slac.stanford.edu/research). We also encourage applications from candidates whose research can bridge SLAC’s current science program with emerging opportunities in machine learning and quantum information science. Inclusiveness and diversity are integral to SLAC’s commitment to excellence in research, engagement, and education. We therefore encourage applications from candidates identifying with groups that are historically underrepresented in physics.

All applications will be reviewed as part of a broad department-wide multi-year search. In addition, special attention will be given in 2021/22 to the following areas:

Cosmic Frontier and KIPAC -- Applicants for a tenure-track assistant professor in any area of physics pursued by SLAC’s Cosmic Frontier program and the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC). The successful applicant will lead an experimental or theoretical research program in one or more of the areas of dark energy, dark matter, inflation, structure formation, or other emerging areas in the Cosmic Frontier. Applicants at the associate or full professor level may also be considered in areas where program leadership is important.

Neutrino Physics -- Applicants for an associate or full professor in experimental neutrino physics. Successful applicant(s) will lead SLAC’s experimental program in neutrino mass probes, and/or lead an experimental program in other areas of neutrino physics, with potential synergies in additional areas of SLAC’s program such as detector development, machine learning, and electron-beam experiments. Applicants at the tenure-track assistant professor level may also be considered.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Physics, and should send materials to the search committee through AcademicJobsOnline. Candidates should upload a cover letter, curriculum vitae (including a publication list), a research statement (three-page combined maximum), as well as a brief (< 300 word) summary of their expected research program. We encourage applicants, as a component of their research statement, to discuss their experience or commitment to engaging with diversity through activities such as fostering an inclusive environment, working with students from diverse backgrounds, or incorporating diverse perspectives. At least three and no more than five letters of reference should be submitted.

Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2021. Applications received after November 15 will be reviewed until the positions are filled.

Stanford is an equal employment opportunity and affirmative action employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, disability, protected veteran status, or any other characteristic protected by law. Stanford welcomes applications from all who would bring additional dimensions to the University's research, teaching and clinical missions.
