Department: Linguistics

Position: Semantics and Pragmatics

Rank: Assistant Professor

Description:

The Department of Linguistics in the College of Arts and Sciences at The Ohio State University seeks to hire an Assistant Professor specializing in the study of linguistic meaning to teach graduate and undergraduate courses in semantics and pragmatics, conduct research, and advise student research. The ideal candidate will bring both theoretical and methodological (e.g., experimentation or fieldwork) expertise to address fundamental research questions about linguistic meaning, and have a secondary specialization in a related subfield, such as morphosyntax, philosophy of language, sociolinguistics, or psycholinguistics. We anticipate that the candidate will not only strengthen the department’s existing collaborations across units and colleges (e.g., with Philosophy, Education, English, the Buckeye Language Network, the College of Engineering, and the Center for Cognitive and Brain Sciences), but also foster new ones. The department is committed to diversity, equity, inclusion, and outreach and we especially welcome applications from under-represented scholars..

Qualifications:

A Ph.D. in Linguistics or a closely related field is required prior to the position start date of August 15, 2022. We seek scholars with a demonstrated ability to teach courses and conduct research in semantics and pragmatics and who are committed to inclusive pedagogy. Appointment is contingent on the university’s verification of credentials and other information required by law and/or university policies, including but not limited to a criminal background check.

Application Instructions:

A complete application consists of a cover letter; curriculum vitae; research and teaching statements; a diversity statement articulating your demonstrated commitments and capacities to contribute to diversity, equity, and inclusion through research, teaching, and mentoring, or outreach and engagement; and three letters of reference. Review of applications will begin on November 15 and will continue until the position is filled. Inquiries may be directed to Michael White at mwhite@ling.osu.edu.
