INTRODUCTION

The Department of Molecular and Cell Biology within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Connecticut invites applications for a non-tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor-in-Residence level. This position is based on the Storrs campus. This is a full-time, 9-month, non-tenure-track position that has the possibility of leading to a multi-year contract. While this position does not require summer teaching, it is possible to offer additional courses during the summer. The position is suitable for candidates who wish to pursue a career with an emphasis on undergraduate teaching.

The successful candidate will be responsible for teaching lecture and laboratory courses in Biochemistry and Microbiology.  Other responsibilities will include the advising of undergraduate students and developing success and retention strategies for biology students.  Successful candidates will be expected to promote a sense of community for all students through the incorporation of interactive and inclusive teaching strategies.  In particular, methods which facilitate participation among members of under-represented groups and integrate multicultural experiences into instruction and research are essential.  Successful candidates will have an ability to develop pedagogical techniques designed to meet the needs of diverse learning styles and intellectual interests.  In addition to teaching responsibilities, the successful candidate will perform service to the Department and/or campus through participation in committee work as requested.

The Department of Molecular & Cell Biology has a broad and interdisciplinary research program that offers courses at the cutting edge of a wide range of molecular biosciences.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Ph.D. in a field related to biochemistry or microbiology by the start date.
  • Experience teaching undergraduate lectures and laboratory courses.
  • Demonstrated expertise in biochemistry and/or microbiology through undergraduate or graduate coursework.
  • A commitment to working with a diverse student body. 
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience teaching large, core curriculum undergraduate-level courses as well as small format courses both in-person and distance learning formats.
  • Track record of developing and implementing inclusive, evidence-based teaching practices, and experiential learning.
  • Experience working with innovative methods designed to improve student success and retention. For example, problem-based and case-based or active learning strategies.
  • Prior experience with course and curriculum development.
  • A record of effective teaching and advising students.
  • Experience teaching scientific writing, responsible conduct of research, or laboratory management.
  • Experience in the design and guidance of undergraduate and graduate research projects.
  • Evidence of integrating technology, such as learning management software, into instruction.

APPOINTMENT TERMS

This position is a full-time, nine (9)-month non-tenure-track appointment, with an anticipated start date of January 1, 2022.  The position may be annually renewable based on performance, funding, and needs of the department and college.  Salary is competitive based upon qualifications.
