Engineering First Year, Teaching Stream Markham Campus (1 Position)

The Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, York University invites highly qualified candidates to apply for a Teaching Stream tenure-track position for Engineering First Year at the rank of Assistant Professor, Teaching Stream to commence on July 1, 2022. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience. All York University positions are subject to budgetary approval.

The successful applicant will be based at Yorks new Markham Campus when operational (expected in Fall 2023) and will become members of the first cohort of resident faculty members. Between the appointment date and the opening of the campus, the appointee will assume a combination of teaching responsibilities at Yorks Keele campus and contribute to the development of academic and research programming planned for the new Markham Campus.

This position will support the first year Engineering curriculum at Markham in the broad area of electrical and computer engineering. This appointment will be responsible for the delivery of the engineering first year courses taught by the Lassonde School of Engineering. Currently, these consist of two introductory computing courses (computational thinking through mechatronics, object-oriented programming from sensor to actuators) and two general engineering courses (ethics, communications and problem solving, engineering design principles). In future, these may be delivered multiple times per academic year.

Candidates should have (i) a Ph.D. in a relevant engineering field, (ii) a Bachelors degree in a relevant engineering field along with a doctorate focusing on higher education pedagogy (such as Ed.D.). Applicants should be licensed as a Professional Engineer in Canada, or successfully seek licensure soon after appointment.

The successful candidate will demonstrate excellence or potential for excellence in teaching university-level courses through their teaching statement, teaching accomplishments, and pedagogical innovations including in high priority areas such as work-integrated and community-based learning, teaching evaluations, and strong letters of reference. The successful candidate will also demonstrate a strong commitment to pedagogy and student success, the capacity to bring a theoretical and practical orientation to computer science teaching, learning and program design, and demonstrate good judgment and a reflective approach to innovation in teaching. Experience with curriculum development and universal design approaches to teaching and assessment is preferred. The successful candidate is also expected to provide evidence of service contributions or potential to contribute to service in administrative and committee work.
