Berkeley Lab’s Physics Division has an opening for a Postdoctoral Fellow to work in the ATLAS

Group. 

 

The successful candidate will participate in the analysis of ATLAS physics data,

including but not limited to the study of photon-induced processes and measurement of

luminosity. The candidate will also contribute to the Pixel Tracker upgrade for the HL-LHC. The

larger LBL ATLAS group makes significant contributions to SM, Higgs, SUSY and Exotics

analyses, and has major roles in the construction of the ITk Pixel and Strips trackers for HL-

LHC, as well as extensive activities in computing and core software. The group contains a

unique mixture of lab staff and faculty members, with a significant number of postdocs and

Position Duties:

  • Work in the ATLAS collaboration with involvement in both technical contributions to the experiment, and physics analysis of data from the experiment.

  • Conduct original research independently and in collaboration with other members of the LBNL group.

  • Contribute to the ongoing ATLAS Upgrade program for the Pixel Tracker.

  • Interact with LBNL and other investigators working on similar or related scientific problems.

  • Report results to supervisor.

  • Prepare research papers for publication.

  • Present research findings at seminars and conferences.


Additional Responsibilities as needed:

  • May mentor Ph.D. students

  • Other duties as assigned


Position Requirements:

  • Ph.D. or equivalent in physics with zero to two years of postdoctoral experience since Ph.D. thesis

  • Experience in particle physics research.

  • Demonstrated ability to attain a high level of achievement as an independent researcher.

  • Ability to work as a team member to accomplish goals.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.


Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience in modern Silicon instrumentation.

  • Ability to mentor students.

  • This is a full-time 2 years postdoctoral appointment with the possibility of renewal based upon satisfactory job performance, continuing availability of funds and ongoing operational needs. You must have less than 2 years of paid postdoctoral experience when first assuming the position, and any extension is subject to the constraint of spending no more than five years total in a postdoctoral appointment. Salary for Postdoctoral positions depends on years of experience post-degree.

  • This position is represented by a union for collective bargaining purposes.

  • Salary will be predetermined based on postdoctoral step rates.
