Margolis Summer Experience Program Overview

Effectively improving health and the value of health care requires multidisciplinary teams and capabilities. To meet this aim, Duke-Margolis uniquely brings together teams of health care and policy experts and organizations to assess key policy and practice challenges and identify and implement impactful solutions. As future policy-leaders and professionals, students are integral team members. The Center offers students (undergraduate and graduate) opportunities to contribute to a variety of projects aimed at improving health and the value of health care through research and the development of innovative, practical, and evidence-based policy solutions through a collaborative and mentored 10-week summer internship experience.

Project Description and Outcomes

Focus Area: Healthcare Transformation, Implementation Science

Overview:  Aim to develop a formal way to guide health systems in planning and evaluating machine-learning enabled clinical decision support (CDS) implementation. Opportunity to work on a mixed qualitative and quantitative methods study focused on using an implementation science approach of participatory system dynamics modeling (PSD) to engage stakeholders in decisions about adopting clinical decision support (Early Warning System (EWS)) that integrates Artificial Intelligence health concepts. We will 1) engage multidisciplinary stakeholders involved in EWS implementation (users, developers, implementers, owners) to co-define common barriers and facilitators to key implementation outcomes of CDS acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility using group model building scripts from the field of system dynamics and 2) evaluate the PSD process by measuring change in commitment to adopt CDS (using measures of acceptability, appropriateness, and feasibility), eliciting feedback, and estimating intervention effort.

Project Deliverables:

Participatory Systems Dynamics Modeling

  • Conduct, collect, code qualitative data using well-defined scripts from system dynamics modeling for a mixed method study
  • Data modeling using system dynamics methods (including transforming qual data for modeling using quan techniques)
