Margolis Summer Experience Program Overview

Effectively improving health and the value of health care requires multidisciplinary teams and capabilities. To meet this aim, Duke-Margolis uniquely brings together teams of health care and policy experts and organizations to assess key policy and practice challenges and identify and implement impactful solutions. As future policy-leaders and professionals, students are integral team members. The Center offers students (undergraduate and graduate) opportunities to contribute to a variety of projects aimed at improving health and the value of health care through research and the development of innovative, practical, and evidence-based policy solutions through a collaborative and mentored 10-week summer internship experience.

Project Description and Outcomes

Data Modeling for the Duke-Carolinas Cord Blood Bank (CCBB) Interns CCBB is one of the largest public cord blood banks in the world. Established in 1998 with support from the National Heart and Blood Institute of the NIH, CCBB is a part of the Duke University School of Medicine.

CCBB has:

-          An extensive inventory of racially diverse cord blood units

-          Several fixed collection sites

-          Multiple collection models

-          Rigorous training programs for collectors and processors

-          Advanced data and document control systems

-          A kit program for donation

-          Accredited by FACT and licensed by the FDA


Unrelated donor, banked umbilical cord blood units at CCBB are listed on the National Marrow Donor Program (NMDP) Be the Match® Registry, an accumulated listing of donated cord blood units from participating banks that are available to provide units for patients needing a hematopoietic stem cell transplant to treat cancer or certain genetic diseases.

Duke-CCBB needs two interns for Summer 2022:

Policy Research Intern will:

  1. Conduct a literature review of the impact of FDA guidelines on public cord donation, reimbursements implications under HERSA, and donor eligibility determination is impacting the use of cord blood units
  2. Assess ethical questions as they arise and other policy implications
  3. Support data analysis and modeling
  4. Co-author manuscript

This position is contingent upon funding

Qualifications and Requirements

-          Undergraduate student with policy analysis experience

-          Previous experience developing and conducting a literature review

-          Strong written/oral communication skills

-          Basic working knowledge of statistics

 

Education level requirement:  Undergraduates/Graduates

Approximate Hours per Week: 40 Hours

Compensation: $15 per hour for Undergraduates and $17 per hour for Graduates

Length of Internship: May 18- July 29, 2022, 10 weeks
