The Department of Statistics and the Department of Physics at The Ohio State University is offering a Post Doctoral Scholar position under the direction of Profs. Matthew Pratola, Richard Furnstahl and Uli Heinz as part of the Bayesian Analysis of Nuclear Dynamics (BAND) project (https://bandframework.github.io). We seek a statistician experienced in constructing Bayesian models who is also interested in the application of Bayesian modeling to address fundamental scientific questions arising in physics.

The successful candidate will work effectively in an inter-disciplinary team to research novel statistical methodology, implement devised methodologies in high-quality software codes, and apply these tools to solve problems at the statistics-physics interface. The position will focus on Bayesian modeling and methodology development for mixing multiple physics simulation models of nuclear dynamics, and building scalable computational algorithms for inference, prediction and uncertainty quantification.

The candidate will have the opportunity to contribute to high-profile collaborative research with Physics experts in an environment with plenty of opportunity for knowledge and career growth. The BAND collaboration, the Dept. of Statistics and the Dept. of Physics regularly host a diverse array of seminars and visitors, offering a rich environment for academic engagement.

Qualifications: Doctoral degree required by start of position. Extensive experience in Bayesian modeling, Bayesian model averaging, model selection, Gaussian processes, computer experiments, computer model calibration, Bayesian regression trees and Markov chain Monte Carlo are desired. In addition, the candidate should be experienced in programming in at least one of C, C++, Python or R. This position is well suited to a statistician with applied interests in either physics and/or the general areas of uncertainty quantification and computer experiments.

The target hiring range for this position is $48,000-$60,000
