The Eric and Wendy Schmidt Center (EWSC) at the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard is seeking exceptional postdoctoral fellows to join the newly-launched center. The EWSC seeks to understand the programs of life and how they connect across biological scales—from the genetic to the cellular to the organismal—by creating a strong community at the interface of machine learning (ML) and biology. Toward this goal, the EWSC brings together a wide range of researchers to identify key challenges, generate new kinds of data, create novel mathematical, computational and algorithmic paradigms, and apply these insights to solve the most pressing problems of biology and medicine.
The ideal candidate will be passionate about conducting research in foundational ML and disease biology, and collaborating effectively with researchers in the EWSC, the Broad Institute, MIT, Harvard, and beyond. The role will be focused on the development of novel ML theory and methods, with a strong bent towards developing the mathematical foundations of which ML algorithms are most suitable to biological applications and why. While experience in ML or related fields is critical to success in the position, prior exposure to biology or medicine is advantageous but not required.
This will be a one-year appointment beginning on July 1, 2022, or an earlier/later mutually agreed upon date, with the possibility of renewal for a second and third year based upon satisfactory performance.
Qualifications and Requirements:
- Ph.D. (expected or obtained) in Computer Science, Engineering, (Bio)Statistics, or a related field
- Strong analytical and written communication skills, including the ability to effectively describe scientific material to both specialized and lay audiences.
- Ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary environment and commitment to participating in EWSC activities
For full consideration, candidates must submit the following documents by January 31, 2022.
- CV and a cover letter, which may include potential avenues of collaboration and supervision by Broad-, Harvard-, or MIT-affiliated faculty
- A research statement of up to three pages, including references (this can be focused on research thus far, and need not be biomedical in nature)
- Names and email addresses of three or more individuals who will provide letters of recommendation The Broad Institute will offer visa sponsorship for this opportunity. All Broad employees, regardless of work location, must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19 by Tuesday, October 12, 2021.
