Organizational Overview

The Omega Group in the Physics Department at BNL focuses on the ATLAS experiment at CERN in Geneva, Switzerland. BNL is the host laboratory for the U.S. ATLAS Operations Program, the U.S. ATLAS HL-LHC Upgrade Project, an ATLAS Tier-1 computing facility, and is designated as part of the U.S. ATLAS Support Center. The Omega Group in the Physics Department at BNL leads several physics analyses on the ATLAS experiment, including Higgs and Electroweak measurements and searches for dark matter and Higgs pair production, and major responsibilities in operations, trigger, and software development. The group has leading roles in the ATLAS HL-LHC upgrade (silicon-strip detector, liquid argon calorimeter readout, and trigger/data acquisition electronics) and has strong R&D programs on trigger/data acquisition, high-performance computing, and silicon detectors. Position Description

The Omega Group at BNL has an opening for a Research Associate to participate in LHC data analysis on the ATLAS experiment and construction of the HL-LHC Upgrade. The successful candidate will have a strong interest in the LHC scientific program and excellent data analysis and programming skills. It is expected that the successful candidate will play a leading role in ATLAS physics analysis during LHC Run 3. This position has a high level of interaction with an international and multicultural scientific community.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participation in the ATLAS scientific program with a strong focus on Electroweak and Higgs physics, including searches for Higgs pair production.

• Participation in developing, constructing, installing, integrating, and commissioning hardware, firmware, and software for the HL-LHC Upgrade of the ATLAS detector.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Ph.D. in high energy or nuclear physics or in closely related fields.

• Experience with data analysis and knowledge of statistical techniques for data analysis.

• Experience with software development for high energy or nuclear physics experiments.

• Knowledge of the development and construction of particle physics detectors.

• Knowledge of machine learning techniques and tools.

• Ability to work in a large international collaboration.

• Hands-on problem-solving skills.

• Clear and concise verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Analysis with LHC data based on C/C++ and Python.

• Experience with machine learning techniques and tools.

• Experience with particle physics detectors, digital signal processing, detector simulation, event reconstruction, and data analysis.

• Experience assembling, commissioning, and operating particle physics detectors.

Other Information:

• Domestic and international travel should be expected.

• BNL policy requires that after obtaining their PhD, eligible candidates for research associate appointments may not exceed a combined total of 5 years of relevant work experience as a post-doc and/or in an R&D position, excluding time associated with family planning, military service, illness, or other life-changing events.

• Initial 2-year term appointment subject to renewal contingent on performance and funding.
