The Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at Colgate University invites applications for a one-year position as Visiting Assistant Professor of French beginning fall 2022. Completion of Ph.D. is required prior to or shortly after the date of hire. Candidates should have a record of excellence in teaching in French language at all levels and in literature. Although the field of specialization is open, preference will be given to candidates whose research focus would extend the department’s current coverage; pre-1700, and/or 19th-century literature, and/or theater would therefore be especially welcome. Normal teaching load is 5 courses per year. The successful candidate will be expected to teach language classes at all levels, as well as survey courses and undergraduate seminars in literature. Participation in all-university programs, including the Liberal Arts Core Curriculum, may also be expected.

Colgate strives to be a community supportive of diverse perspectives and identities. All applications should speak directly, either in the cover letter or in the teaching statement, to the candidate’s ability to work effectively with students across a wide range of identities and backgrounds. Review of applications will begin on March 21, 2022, and continue until the position is filled. Interviews of selected candidates will be held via video conferencing later in March or April.
