Description The History Department at Cornell seeks to hire two postdoctoral scholars for two three-year positions starting July 1, 2022, as a part of the Active Learning Initiative in Cornell’s College of Arts & Sciences. Candidates should have obtained their PhD in History (or a related field) within the last five years and should ideally be trained also in the digital humanities including GIS, public history curation techniques, and related skills. In addition to annual salary and benefits, the postdoctoral teaching associate will also receive an annual research allowance and reimbursement for moving expenses up to $3000. The two postdocs will work closely with faculty on infusing the following courses with active learning techniques, in both lectures and discussion sections: The Deep Fake; Sports and Politics in American History; A Global History of Love; Subversion as Foreign Policy; The World of Modern Japan; and The Rise and Fall of the Soviet Empire. Each postdoc will assist with modifying three courses over this period by helping develop active learning activities, syllabi, teaching materials for Canvas, rubrics for assessments, and materials for discussion and course projects. We are looking for
candidates with a commitment to generating inclusive classroom environments
that actively engage diverse student populations in our courses. As part of the Active Learning Initiative, the postdocs will attend active training teaching methods provided by Cornell’s Center for Teaching Innovation. They will also benefit from professionalization workshops the History department currently offers graduate students, including workshops on writing cover letters, CVs, diversity statements, job/postdoc/fellowship applications, syllabi development, academic publishing, note-taking and data management strategies, social media training, and careers outside of academia.
Postdocs will also be mentored by the current chair of the department, as well as faculty members with whom they will be working. Postdocs will also be expected to participate in a ‘Teaching Collective,’ a group that will meet three or four times per semester to offer pedagogical workshops on ALI techniques and challenges. We anticipate that the postdocs will spend about 80% of their time on teaching-related work and 20% on their own research. Eligibility Requirements Applicants eligible for the 2022-23 academic year include PhD candidates who received the PhD degree after 2019 and no later than June 2022. Applicants who do not have the PhD in hand at the time of application must include a letter from the committee chair stating that the PhD degree will be conferred before the term of the fellowship begins. International applicants are welcome to apply, contingent upon visa eligibility. Application Procedures Upload the following application materials to Academic Jobs Online by April 4, 2022. 1.
